I don't know if this is accurate, but I like my interpretationThis song, among other things, seems to be about how complicated can be a friendship when one of the parts is in need of help In the lines "I'll do everything I can so you can be what you do" and also in the circuit rider reference, it's like he questions the other part playing the savior in the worst possible way, as a means to feel power over other people It's not hard to imagine to be friend of a musical genius and feel belittled by his talent, but if you act like the preacher on a horse that comes to help him, it's a boost for the ego
