The Olympics as an event is way more important than the individual sports within it Also the sheer number of rather silly sports included has devalued Olympic events Public sport has only one function which is entertainment and money and sponsorship only gets involved because of the audience it generates When not taking part in the games most of the Olympic athletes are taking part in an activity which the general populace simply doesn't care about and it's for this reason that they have difficulty attracting financial support Public money should never be used to promote marginal sports

This video is pretty misleading Just because every Olympic athlete isn't making trillions of dollars, that doesn't mean they're "poor" That might be a bit more accurate for less developed countries, but in the US around 600 athlete's competed in this years Olympics, which is by far one of the most of any country, and I'd be hard-pressed to say that all of them are "poor" They may not get any money directly from the Olympics themselves, but they probably work decent day jobs with good family and community support systems that even allow them to compete at this level in the first place A lot of them might've gone to school for their respective sporting discipline or work in a field like engineering Ffs, the US had a 16 year old named Poe Pinson compete in the women's street skating event while shooting commercials and getting endorsements from Nike prior, who seems to be well-supported by her dad that got her into skating in the first place, and has probably made money from competing in SLS, a premier US street skating league And she didn't even medal in her respective event iirc Just because an athlete's sport doesn't pay well doesn't mean their regular day job doesn't or that they don't have a good support system at home or live in poverty for Christ's sake
