Haven't finished the video yet but my guess is that it's any group of 3 ascending numbers Comment from : @lostmyedge_ |
As an aircraft technician I did not find this as challenging as some because I’m diagnosing problems everyday and trying to eliminate possibilities rather than confirm Comment from : @philipolson1965 |
The point is: most people expect that the numbers they name are in direct successionbrThat's basically what is tested in many other questions from math tests to IQ tests and whatnotbrWe are not expecting to skip numbers of those sequencesbrbrAlso, we're expecting some kind of formulabrIt's a trick question Not some kind of out of the box thinking Comment from : @nadvic1797 |
10,21,41 Comment from : @KenezIssacJohnson |
The bias might be that this number sequence thing is usually in IQ tests, which we are all familiar with, but in IQ tests it's never "ascending order" It kind of undermines the point Comment from : @keaton718 |
This is awesome Amazing! Not only about cognitive bias, but also how do we perceive the importance of failure in our life Comment from : @hafiawafda4255 |
I spotted the rule by 2:00 in Ascending numbers Comment from : @claytonuliana1303 |
I love that Veritasium covers all types of science, but these cognitive bias topics are my favorite Comment from : @notme222 |
Bro i got that very soon that as long as the numbers are in Ascending in Order they are true Comment from : @ghostlive2393 |
I think the reason why people continue to propose numbers doubling in size is because they're expecting the rule to be more restricting rather than less They're trying to find something that they expect to fit the rule that doesn’t, rather than the other way around Or in other words, they're attempting to find ways in which their theory is inconsistent, not the ways in which it is incomplete Comment from : @overpower3382 |
My gut is the next number is higher than the previous Comment from : @psmylife6832 |

this is a hilarious video from the perspective of Truth being white is the ultimate cogntive bias Comment from : @eyyuh9077 |
Is the rule you have to say 3 numbers hence he says "it fits the rules" despite people saying 1,3,5 or etc because its just 3 numbers? Comment from : @Danrc_legend |
sometimes on wordle i use letters i know are wrong because the other letters in the word are important Comment from : @jacksonbrown1830 |
3, 6,12br1, 2, 3br3, 2, 1br-1, 1, 3brbrIs what I would have asked in order before saying ascending order, any number Comment from : @jm-holm |
Religion is with the most cognitive bias Comment from : @GunsNGloryShow |
When he revealed the rule It was quite anticlimatic 😅 Comment from : @FranRojo91 |
My first instinct was that it has to be whole numbers Comment from : @TheDrumSyndicate |
Epic -- have you ever read Charlie Munger's lecture on the psychology of human misjudgement? I think you'll dig it! Comment from : @jacksonkerchis |

Dude was cooking even a decade ago Comment from : @admetaindex9581 |
after confirming it wasn't the number doubling each time, I thought it might've been the sequence has to have 3 numbers Comment from : @kjursa |
2:55 for anyone that wants the answer fast Click here God Bless! Comment from : @maraxussrafhael |
One issue I can see with this is that In some sciences and especially psychology, the sheer number of variables as well as typically small sample sizes makes finding something that doesn't follow the rule very easy, in fact finding something that doesn't follow the rule doesn't necessarily disprove the rule, it could just mean the rule isn't complete, like Newtonian physics The basis of whether or not you can make accurate predictions based on your rule is a strong indicator that it is correct, or at the very least a useful rule to follow Comment from : @kevinforget549 |
This scientific theorie is later criticized by karl popper, who basically states you cant prove nor disporve enything look it up if ur interested Comment from : @matsderoos516 |
His rule is that the numbers must be ascending in sequence Comment from : @wechildrenofthepromise7561 |

is the rule ascending numbers? Comment from : @GaneshMKarhale |
I knew it must’ve been ascending order! Well, I didn’t know, but I guessed Killed me to watch them not try it until they did Comment from : @fanachy7861 |
Aced it but I did go into it expecting it to be about cognitive bias so Comment from : @jiowyhn |
as a person who is bad at math, i understand absolutely nothing Comment from : @ot7sessed |

Figured it out before halfway through the video Comment from : @eros727 |
As a programmer, I would have this solved in seconds Comment from : @RavenMobile |

There’s a joke about an astrologist, a physicist and a mathematician looking at a sheep in a field Not quite the same point, but a similar principle Comment from : @EngelofNorse |
That’s the philosophical method of St Thomas Aquinas He always tries to prove the negative, and often expresses those negatives better than their actual proponents did Comment from : @ericpavlat5121 |
I had it in 2 seconds People are dumb Comment from : @scibi71 |
My first guess was 9, 2, 99 Comment from : @cocokaufmann8689 |
after the first like 3 numbers I knew It's the same approach as wordle, if you have no clue how to approach something and your first attempt doesn't work just do the polar opposite Comment from : @soapcomvods9786 |
it is very incorrect example and test people always said to prove that their rule is false nobody had not bias and why falsifiability is possible is just property of logic operation "AND" by the deductive exploration, logical bool must be balenced Comment from : @OI0288 |
of course black swans are austrailian native Comment from : @hafplace1346 |
BrilliantbrApplies to theories, assumptions, and so called "plans" or "strategies"brAlways second guess Always put your own thoughts to the test If you can always find flaws in other people's reasoning, you can always find flaws in yours Comment from : @nceAKAEgo |
id ask 0 0 0 Comment from : @gh324 |
I thought of ascending numerical values rather quickly, and was also waiting for someone to experiment with negative, decimal, and irrational numbers I've been severel-e disappointed by many a fine pi-ople tau-day Comment from : @missseaweed2462 |

That's what we software testers try to do Penetrate any bias that everything works well in the software according to the set rules It's actually very hard to do Comment from : @manicdim13 |
He was onto something a decade ago, and still is now! Love when the content leaves the viewers wondering Comment from : @kd_ss |
i thought it was a trick bc he asked them to say 3 numbers and they did, so saying 4 numbers wouldnt fit the rule Comment from : @jinxxed1524 |
I'm happy that i got it half way through the video, this is because I'm always doubting myself Comment from : @ZomboidMania |
It's called validating an opinion, a key component of critical thinking Comment from : @michaelotto8696 |
Lol i got it about half way Comment from : @skydude7682 |

Looking to confirm a belief is not as useful as trying to disprove it, thus arriving at some sort of confirmationbrI'm going to be more interesting at partiesbrMaybebr*research ensues Comment from : @echognomecal6742 |
To be honest I got it after the first guess, that wasn't hard at all those people are probably acting Comment from : @Israel_will_prevail |
I actually do the disproving subconsciously without realizing Comment from : @dethsyn |
these are the dumbest people of all time Comment from : @-youngish |
always trying to only get the right answer can be counter productivebrI think it because of the school system people don't normally think like thatbrbecause we're only taught to get right answers onlybrI hate that programming brthanks for the update Comment from : @Empled |
This is the backbone of the scientific method Skepticism and the requirement to work on disproving your theory Rather than having a bias to proving it And whenever a scientist shows data and has a new hypothesis, or promoting a theory, all other scientists gang up on them! Their main objective is to create experiments and collect additional data in the attempt to disprove And we have the mathematicians I do see the value of mathematical proofs But I would say that I don't believe a mathematical proof ialways/i represents reality So the same skepticism at the heart of the scientific method should also be the skepticism applied to the mathematical proofs Comment from : @garyoldham4449 |
Guessing before I finish: The rule is that the numbers must be in ascending order Comment from : @andwithtthat |
Not to brag, but I figured it out in like 10 seconds Comment from : @vatsalyakumar538 |

The Quran cannot be disproved, read it and see for yourself Comment from : @carnage621 |
As someone who loves guessing games, that was my first guess You have to do these kinds of things by process of elimination If you don't try new things, you will never find the solution, haha Idk if it was just me who found this video sort of frustrating to watch, haha Great video, though!! 😂 Comment from : @rubyxx6208 |
6, 3,2 Comment from : @abigailslade3824 |
Very few things more frustrating than watching these people give 3 numbers Comment from : @Vex-the-Witch |
Well richard cranium teaser Comment from : @Christopher-z4j7n |
The rule states that you can never prove a theory by example, unless you can show all that exist, but it only takes one false example to disprove any theory Comment from : @terryt2910 |
Just needs to be a higher number let's see if im right Comment from : @jaytherestless2117 |
I wish contemporary AI researchers would internalise this lesson! Great video!! Comment from : @snarkyboojum |
Confirmation bias Comment from : @mayam3857 |
My problem with brain teasers like this is that they play on our assumptions of how words and phrases are most commonly accepted You give someone a set of three numbers and you ask what the rule is, the intent is clearly what mathematical rule defines them The only time it isn't is when someone is deliberately playing against expectation like this guy Comment from : @derek96720 |
Boy I hope he edited out some people who actually approached this with decent plans Comment from : @KrazyCouch2 |
I must be abnormal Comment from : @dentReviews |
I got it in the first 5 seconds, is everybody dumb or am I a genius? I know im not even close to genius, Im just confused why it took them so much time to figure it our Comment from : @VAVAKE |
I must admit I was disappointed to see so many stick to their hypothesis even when you'd confirmed it wasn't true Comment from : @justasomeone7860 |
Before watching more of this after the initial explanation and reaction of the first couple my first thought was to ask: One, two, three and eight, four, two confirming if the rule is or isn't simply numbers going up brbrWatching the rest of this is kind of funny, people seem to immediately make up their bown/b rule for some reason instead of guessing yours, happy I got it right immediately :) Comment from : @Olixer109 |
After 2 guesses I said it’s ascension by any increase Comment from : @Mattnoble80 |
God, the Lord Jesus Christ loves you! Restore your relationship with God by repenting of your sins and putting your faith in Jesus Christ, " that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures" (1 Corinthians 15:3-4) Comment from : @LordJesusChristisGodandSaviour |
