I remember when I watched this much younger than I am now that I couldn't put my finger on why I didn't like it (and I was enamored with anything containing the underutilized Gary Oldman back in those days) This screenplay is cursed It's this kind of purple prose that scares people away from enjoying Shakespeare (unjustly so)

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead is a challenging and imaginative film adaptation of a play I would speak to the play and it's author but I am woefully ignorant of both brbrThe actors are both excellent in whatever roll they portray The film itself, although this scene might not betray it, is a psychological and philosophical mediation on identity brbrThough smartly written and entertaining, it is a film which can be quite challenging and which will stick with you when it's done

'Rozencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead', 'Anonymous', 'All is Well' are but a few on my list of recommended films for those wanting 'less canonical' Shakespeare viewing ('All' is a fantastic paean to The Bard, a sad, slow-paced, exquisitely pastoral take on Shakespeare's return to Stratford at the conclusion of his career in 1612 Though it does take certain liberties with facts, it paints a playful (!!!) 'What if?' picture)
