I watched a bunch of forging nails videos in preparation for forging my first nail (and first blacksmithing project ever!) I love how everyone does it just a little differently and there's no "right" way to do it I'm learning from my dad who learned at Old Sturbridge Village, a living history museum in Massachusetts, almost 50 years ago I'm documenting my journey learning blacksmithing on my channel So cool how these skills are passed down through the generations!

It seems to me you are using a special hardy tool to cut the nails? to gauge the amount of material on the head and control the depth of cut as well? The biggest problem I have and other smiths in the club I belong to is getting the right amount of material in the head Usually what happens is the nail blows through the header or too much and the nail head is too big!

I see a number of shops on YouTube have their opinion and version of how nails used to be made Are there many different versions? Or is it best guess?

You can always separate the good blacksmiths from the bad by how many heats that take to make a standard nail You sir are a good smith

Would you say the nails you are making in this presentation are "clench nails"? Or does that have more to do with how they are used rather than how they are formed?
