I learnt english for many years in school I was one of the least talented students and I was very ashamed of it Later on, I needed to study psychology in university inenglish Only reading and translating the stuff or correlating the concepts with my native language courses and tests After 20 years of hearing, reading and speaking almost at allI went to a trip outside of my country and I found myself communicating in english better than I expected (I was very excited on that trip) Several years later, I married a non-native man and our love language is english Unperfect-ed english 😂 I moved abroad as well and surely, that would have been an impossibility for me without english What I try to say is thatI spoke almost 0 english for many years, I had 0 confidence I can speak (but I did understand it more and more, reading and so on) Eventually, things came out better Now, I try to learn a foreign language andI find myself trapped in the same way I just cannot speak it, I feel too ashamedbut I remind myself that english was the same and still, today, this is my soul language (imperfect as it is) I know it might take way more time to learn without speaking, butI hopw first to read and understand this new language and eventually bring myself to the bridge of courage to start speaking 😂 brLove your channel, wish you success!!!

I tend to frame it in terms of passive and active learning Passive learning is listening and reading Active is speaking and writing I do agree with people who say you should not start concentrating on speaking too early, as many do The good thing here is that you can start learning easily outside the country of the language and start concentrating on speaking when you get there

By "output" you mean if we use say DuoLingo we have to also speak / talk the new language as well? Even if all I want to do is be able to read in this new language? Thanks

WRONG He obviously never studied ancient, now unspoken languages We can read them and gain great insight and knowledge from ancient writings but only a tiny tiny percentage of people could fluently write and speak the languages today

I am trying to learn 2 languages apart from the two that I already picked upand I always speak and read in those languages when I am at home, because I know that outside I will have to speak my mother language which is spanishbrI think with that technique, I got used to those languagesbrbrPD I love you channel!
