I wanted to address something proactively as this is a sensitive topic In creating this video, we tried extremely hard to avoid painting the picture that Indian Americans are the “model minority”brbrThe impetus for this idea was the fact that I came across that graph shown in the beginning and was genuinely curious of why this was, objectively? What events happened in history and policy that created such opportunities? What cultural elements were important to this whole concoction?brbrAs you all watch, please understand that I am also learning about the sensitivity around topics like these but wanted to go forth with this idea given that it hits home, literally

Meanwhile average Indian income in India is less than $5k USD 14 billion people live in India and the US has 3349 million with 51 million Indian Americans brbrWhile it's great to have pride in one's culture, you have to look at the big picture Indian American immigrants are some of the hardest working and most educated from India They are thriving in the US after working hard to leave their country brbrThis is less about Indian's being 'built different' or being better in any way This would be like saying Black and Hispanic Americans are the lowest income because they are the laziest and least intelligent of the population Which obviously is absolutely false The circumstances of how they got to this country have greatly impacted their ability to get out of poverty Most African Americans got here through slavery and have been digging their way out of that disadvantage for decades Mexicans are next to the US and are physically able to get across the border without paying for a very expensive flight So naturally the US receives the most educated Mexicans who will get better paying jobs, but those who are uneducated and having to flee oppression or corruption from their home country and leave everything behindbrbrIf the US was next to India, this income data would be very different

There is no meritocracy here but exclusion Like other groups, religious or ethnic, that are overrepresented at the top, it is all due to exclusively helping each other with jobs and business opportunities and marrying within the community, always opting for endogamy It is zero-sum game just like it has always been, unless you are arguing that you can marry two people at the same time or two people having the same job

I’m a citizen of India, high schooler living in the United States It’s weird, man… I have an Indian accent, speak Malayalam fluently, learn many Indian art forms and know the general knowledge of India, but at the same time I feel like an outcast between both groups Whenever I go back to India I don’t automatically feel at home, but it’s the same here as well I don’t relate to Indian Americans because I’m not an American, I don’t relate to kids living in India, many of my values are things that a lot of Indians might hate me for (LGBT rights, feminism is important, elders don’t need so much respect because that makes them arrogant, people are making too big a deal about religion etc…), but at the same time I still love India and I love the US too Jeez!

Indians are the most educated people coming to America with the enormous advantage of being basically English speakers from day one of arrival You cannot underestimate how important this language skill is over all other first generation immigrants The "ramp up" to learn the American system of education, health care and finance is greatly accelerated What it took many other cultures 3 or more generations to accomplish due to the language barriers and cultural racism the Indian community was to destroy in unprecedented rate brbrHowever the Indians are a small population relative to all other groups As their numbers grow it will be difficult to keep this up as cultural norms become diluted in favor to more Indian American and less Indian
