when I was a kid growing up in Germany, two classics were "Der Struwelpeter" und "Max und Moritz", these books were in my family for more than 3 generations!

Try the books by Paul Maar He has books for young children (Das kleine Känguru), a bit older (Eine Woche voller Samstage, Am Samstag kommt das Sams zurück,) He has published a poetry book for children (Jaguar und Neinguar), he plays with the german language in a way children can understand it, but get a good taste of rhythm and rhyme Some books even made it into (german) movies And it is fun to read these books to your children my favourite is "In einem tiefen dunklen Wald" which plays with classic "Märchen" by exchanging the roles of prince and princess and other stereotypes, but not for very small children because part of the fun is seeing were he plays with normal children stories
