This is deeply spiritual and metaphorical act of Jesus and most Christians don’t get it- Jesus cleansing the temple, is him cleansing our own body, heart, and mind- of animal trade/slaughter/abuse, wickedness, deception, of trading our body for money The temple, the church is our own heart- not a building Our body and mind is a house of prayer, it is the Father’s property But we have traded our body for the purpose of making money, devoting our whole lives to jobs, trade, corporate interests And polluting it and turning it into a graveyard for animal slaughter He cleanses and purifies our body by cleansing our diet into one without animal products, and to cleanse our livelihood and activities so that we are not trading our body for money and exchanging our mind for money Instead he changes it into a house of prayer, not one of human business and survival interests

A dedicated house of The Lord like the temple in Jerusalem was both literally and figuratively meant to be a House of Worship (and Peace) It would have been hard to feel The Spirit in a temple with many people likely loudly trying to sell animals for sacrifice and the exchanging of money to compete with one another for business It would likely have diverted the focus of many from the importance and magnitude of what should be happening in the temple It would have made it hard to feel peace when surrounded by such commotionbrIt may not immediately have made sense that the Prince of Peace drove them out, but what better way of promoting peace is there than by clearing room for it?

I recently learned this and felt it should be shared for more context: The Sadducees were the group in Jerusalem who operated the temple Since the Romans had taken over Jerusalem, everyone used Roman money for their transactions, but Roman money could not be taken into the temple because it had graven images (sort of like idol worship), so the Sadducees ran an operation to exchange money from Roman currency to temple appropriate currency, but were extorting the people who travelled a long ways to go to the temple Jesus challenged their authority to do this and said people shouldn't be using the temple for profit
