 Legal tender in the UK is explained here: wwwbankofenglandcouk/knowledgebank/what-is-legal-tender Spoliers: (1) it does not apply to buying diesel at Tesco's; (2) even if it did a £100 coin wouldn't qualify; and (3) even if it did legal tender requires that you tender the exact amount owed, and you didn't

 according to royal mint the shop doesnt have to give change when the legal tender thing comes into play thats what it says on their website

 A load of 50p and 20p pieces do not have to be accepted as legal tender depending on the amount of these pieces you provide - £1 can be given in unlimited quantities
