For me as a language teacher who teaches English as a foreign language and who has a University diploma in linguistics, it is appealing Chomsky saying that "shall" and "will" is "nonsense Comparative linguistics shows very clearly the origins of English It is probably one of the most fusion languages on the planet "Will" exists in most of the European languages meaning "future planned action, determination, etc" Comment from : @bondarem |

Wow, his explanation on Chinese "dialects" as being as different to one another like French is to Romanian is startling It really shows the ignorance from the institutions we are taught from as kids - if we can learn that French, German and Spanish are different languages, we can definitely learn the different languages spoken in China It just cements his point that what we learn in school is wrong Regardless, I welcome this new knowledge as an adult Language learning has personally opened my eyes to the world in a way I've never seen before (opens the doors to history, politics, sociology, literature - everything that defines a culture), and linguistics is its beautiful pairing!! These interviews and lectures I am stumbling on YT are a gold mine Comment from : @sabs3820 |

Question for linguists that were linguists in 1989: To me as someone with an MA in linguistics, this seems like he is explaining this in what today one would teach Ling 101 Was that the case at this time? In other words, would a high level graduate student in 1989 answer these questions the same way Chomsky is explaining the concepts but the tv program would prefer to have an expert explain it even though a graduate student could give the same answers or is Chomsky here saying something that a 1989 graduate student would have found profound? or would these concepts have sounded quite basic to a linguistics student at the time? As far as I'm concerned one of the biggest geniuses of the XX century, no doubt Another one, although in a different field, would be Bob Dylan He is the master of poetic language, that's the way I see it While Noam is the master of language in general Like communication, theory, the metalanguage, the funcionality of the human brain Chomsky is as close to being book smart as it gets, but he is also a father figure, a living legend on his own The father of linguistics and pioneer in everything that would later become the study of languages Comment from : @bsnf-5 |

Noam Chomsky says the unvaccinated should just remove themselves from societybr'How can we get food to them?' asks Chomsky 'Well, that's actually their problem’ brbrWhat a dope! Comment from : @Dadshreds |
Chomsky is a despicable hypocrite The Wall Street Journal revealed that Chumpsky was hanging out with his pedophile buddy Epstein (who he also asked to help with his finances) Ever since the revelations that Chimpsky was hanging out with Epstein and Zionist butchers like Ehud Barak, he's gone silent Chumpsky yad the gall to get indignant at being questioned about his association with Epstein No doubt Chumpsky is ducking hard questions about his hypocrisy and moral corruption Nothing like so-called "anarchists" that like hanging out with a billionaire Oligarch pedophile and pimpbrbrCome on Noam, come out of your hole and confess your crimes and betrayals Comment from : @AR-ml9eo |
I'm a high school language teacher and I"be been in the profession for over 22 years now Chomsky's outstanding books on language and linguistics were the ones I frequently read and refer to and they had paramount contribution for my successful achievements in my career for those yearsbr May God bless him with healthy, blissful and peaceful life, Amen Comment from : @DerejeGebrehiwot-y1y |

The way he talked about language made me think he has some Marxist worldview, I googled it and "[he] characterize himself as an anarchist with radical Marxist leanings" Comment from : @icxcnika7358 |
The purpose of language is to communicate ideas Rules of standardization that enhance the communication process are accepted because they help facilitate a process They are discarded when they impede the objective So blah blah blah, Chomsky Comment from : @36cmbr |

Can I say I really appreciate Noam's effort to be nuanced It's such an important characteristic of intelligence and deep understanding of a subject Comment from : @daviddunn1377 |
I wonder if the myth of the purity of race is tied to the purity of the language Purity seems a theme that runs through human thought but is either mythological or hypocritical Comment from : @daviddunn1377 |
French, for me, was terribly difficult if only because of the pronunciations German was easier as it's closer to English but I was poor at both I have tried Spanish with about the same poor result brThe hardest part for me is the self consciousness at being a poor speaker of another language brThe end result is that I try to be gracious in dealing with people who are not native English speakers brI do, however, give native speakers of English a hard time about their use of English Comment from : @daviddunn1377 |
But can he spell Comment from : @operationbuzz |
I'm a tri-lingual person learning my 4th language I completely agree with Mr Chomsky I learned English over 35 years ago and it's absolutely frustrating to see how much the English language has changed since those days Lots of money and time learning grammar rules, phonetics, etc etc just to hear "native" speakers to throw everything out the window every time they speak😂😂😂 Comment from : @lunevîSasû2025 |

In the early Middle Ages, Anglo-Saxon monks were sent as missionaries to the area now known as Germany The reason for this is very simple Until the 9th century, there were virtually no language barriers within the West Germanic dialect continuum in other words, Old English and the dialect mix from which the German language later developed were technically the same thing Comment from : @franzdeassi13 |
