From my experiences in scanning flatware for my wife when she had an antique business, it pretty much is marked as such on an inconspicuous place Once you've handled these pieces, you can detect sterling just by the satiny feel of the surface and the depth of the patina if it hasn't been polished Comment from : @mrc4912

From experience genuine silver flatware is identified by heating up a bowl of very hot soup Place flatware into bowl and wait a minute Genuine silver will transfer heat to handle as hot as the soup Plate silver, stainless steel etc won't get hot Comment from : @williamkuhns2387

Learned a couple things, something they didn't mention is also look at craftsmanship If I remember right from researching years ago is look for solder points With silver, you should see seamless joints with legs or bases and you typically won't find screws holding pieces together, Comment from : @Alchemist09

you can not melt of plating , you can only take off plating by acid , mercury , reverse electroplating If you heat it up you will just burn off the plating Comment from : @huckstirred7112
