I spent 2 years at Flugplatz Ramstein in the late 70s, 76-78 I absolutely love the country, my 3 years of high school German helped a lot Granted I did make a few mistakes but was never criticized for them I remember once at A Gasthaus in Kaiserslautern an elderly couple asked to share my table and we had a rather nice conversation, even with my errors

I’m very fortunate I got to learn a little of the language in college I still remember common phrases but sentences still throw me off lol Became friends with a girl who was visiting my class from Salzburg, Austria and struck up a conversation using both English and German words to help each other along It’s amazing how much the mind retains a language early in life compared to older ages when it somewhat closes

I appreciate learning the way locals speak vs the formal way, and having a non-fluent speaker in the video made it more realistic It helped distinguish between the fluent and not so fluent way, and it shows that one doesn't need to be perfect to be understood AND thank you for necessary phrases These apps waste time with words I won't need any time soon* Well done!brbr*PS one of the first words duolingo taught me was "bear" and used "you are a bear", while Memrise taught me "apart from that" 😑

I spent last weekend in Cologne and for a few weeks before that has been using this to learn a bit of German Limited success, particularly as I came accross so many English speakers so it sort of undermined my attempts Still frequently used bitte, danke and Tschuss and ich spreche keine Deutsch Also got a 'Wunderbar' from a lady who asked me to take a photo which I quite liked

As a note to any language learning, it really benefits you to listen to what is ACTUALLY being said than just saying what your hear For example, I'm American and have been in Germany for one week I've noticed though that there is a huge difference between the way the German is saying "ich" and the American that is saying "itch" or "ish" Listen to the German The "ch" is more like a cat hiss sound in the back of the throat than an English "ch" sound or the "sh" I sometimes heard from herbrbrIt's not easy to do without a lot of practice and muscle memory I'm just saying it helps to actively listen for those details (Like the "oo" sound versus ü, which is more like an "ee" sound but with round lips This is very common in European languages so it helps to hear the difference, even if you can't pull it off when you speak)

There are other articles in German ( - der" "die," and "das" are definite articlesbr- "ein" "eine," einen " are indefinite articles"den" "dem" Are definite articles ("den" is used in the accusative,and "dem" Use in the dative case) German is not as easy as you think! German is a very, very difficult language)

My Girlfriend ( Melanie ) was born in Fulda in 1980 and came to the US with her mother when she was very young She refused to teach me how to speak German She said "she forgot" HOW do you FORGET to speak the language of your MOTHER ! ? I think she was somehow self conscious or embarrassed I would imitate her mother's German accent and it would drive her ( my girlfriend ) crazy ! I met her when I was 34 and she was 19 She just passed away from brain cancer the last week of June 2023 I never got a chance to go to Germany with her It's something I wanted to do with her when I retired We were together for 23 and a half years
