A lot of arts are connected with regards to language Theatre, music, storytelling and narrative writing, psychology and an interest in people and cultures helps Language is all of those things and more, and if you fall behind in either of those areas, for instance not picking up an instrument like the guitar, your language skills are going to suffer accordingly Speaking one language is one thing Speaking five is something completely different They can not be compared Playing by the rules of children won't cut it when you have to produce perfect intonation in wildly different languages in a cohesive manner Comment from : @voilabolognessich423 |

Svenskar och norrmän förstår varann litegrann Provade ni prata med varann på svenska och norska? Comment from : @kavorkagames |

This video will help me learn ANY language Thank you Comment from : @selmas |
Learn piano-practice every day, learn language practice every day, after one year you could have at least 180 to 360 hours…something is going to happen! Do not stop in the beginning and it is ok to learn very short words but repeated pronunciation as you hear it over and over… Comment from : @Ranger1216 |
Learning actually relevant words, about things you actually do and like, saves so much time, and are easier to remember because they have a bpurpose/b to being in your mind Comment from : @MazTheMeh16 |

the fastest way to learn is to immerse yourself in a region of native speakers if you can't do that talking to a bilingual person online a few times a week is a close second consulting books occasionally at first is good but most learning is active and practical not passive and theoretical Comment from : @_xBrokenxDreamsx_ |
so we are really taking a basic method that everyone can think of and blow it up like its a game changer ? Comment from : @MerrowGula |

Hello! Idk if you had ever made a video about this, but could you make a video about how you could use your languages to make money? I've been a follower of your account since 2017 and had been learning my languages respectively I honestly had lost hope of even continuing this journey at this point because I feel incompetent against like job requirements C1 etc, certificates to get into entry level jobs I was hoping if you could share your experience about this, and how you could get a job with my languages i'm at best in the lower intermediate, and upper intermediate level but I honestly can't find a job despite learning languages for these long Comment from : @francisL2001 |
Hello 👋 guys, my wife is a Filipina so I hear Tagalog for 30 years but I can't learn this language properly 😅 Comment from : @GermanHodl |
Bro, I’m a native Spanish speaker, and I noticed that at the end of the video, you said 'lo quiero' At first, I didn’t understand why you said that, but now I get it HAHAHA You meant to say 'los quiero,' which is like 'I love you' in Spanish The only thing missing in the sentence is the 'S' to make it make more sense Comment from : @Teo_XP |
i kinda get like super involved in that thing i like and revolve my whole life around it, obviously thats a great way to burn out Do you have any advice on how to balance that? i also loved this vid and how it goes about topics kudos to both of you Comment from : @willnewell9242 |

Steve Martin in The Pink Panther was trying to learn to say Hamburger and failed miserably but it was hilarious I like that with languages Comment from : @johnbowen8969 |
Huh, boi, that intro! It was soo cool! :) Good job! I felt like I was going to watch something that changed the whole world and my perception of reality, lol! I loved it! Comment from : @AndrisGameDev |
I haven't even fully finished watching this video, but I have to say what I love the most about it is that you let the speaker talk and think You haven't interrupted her or gone off on your own tangents about whatever, you just let her speak And it's fucking wonderful This is such a breath of fresh air compared to 95 of podcasts out therebrbrThank you for that! Comment from : @CarloNyte |
I was so put off learning a new language from school lessons I had a French teacher with a stutter, impossible to learn anything when the teacher is not clear to understand Comment from : @snapdragon2441 |
You can learn any language your way and use it any way you want, but to be able to teach others, you'll have to learn grammar rules Grammar rules it's a logic of how the language work you're not teaching children that you can command them, "do what I say, it'll work" Human adults need logic and explanation to understand and learn smoothly That's a way adult human's brain work Comment from : @munarong |
Some of her english uses norwegian sentence structuresbrbr«I hadn’t put words on it» would more typically be stated as «i hadn’t put it into words», but it is the word-for-word translation of the norwegian expression «Jeg hadde ikke satt ord på det»brbrThis is the most norwegian thing thing i can think of 😂 Comment from : @mobilkonto1 |
Just run faster? OK Comment from : @codyrunsfast1 |
Ilys's video prompted me to take more seriously the tactic of listening to content over and over again I did this for a few months and noticed a jump in my comfort level in Swedish And now, with over a month of not listening much, I notice that I've become rustier It's definitely time to resume listening even a little every day The cumulative effect has won me over Comment from : @jbrains |
Doing the same thing but with Danish Comment from : @chasep9440 |
Great interview! At 31:14 Ilys says 'way' with a Canadian accent 🙂 Comment from : @vking1358 |

I am 73 years old and have been learning German every day for 3 1/2 years So you can learn a language as an old dog (New tricks)brI lived in Munich, Germany for five years and I picked up enough German to get around That was in the 1980's Over the years I forgot a lot of itbrDuring the pandemic I decided to learn a language At first I tried French and Italian but it was discouraging So I knew that I already knew some German and decided to devote my time to that brI am at a B1 kevelbrThe highlight of this past Summer was meeting a German family at the beach I was able to practice with them for an hour Comment from : @shiny2423 |
As an English learner, I can relate to all she says I tried many different ways to learn the language, but it just started to work when I gave up to follow methods and decided to learn it my way Sometimes it is frustrating and I suffer from lack of motivation, but seeing her videos pushes me to keep going Comment from : @brenerleite |
The thing about her doing nothing other than learning Norwegian is critical in learning quickly If you learn in one year with 5 hours a day, it won't take someone 5 years with one hour a day It will take longer because the relation isn't linear The quicker you can learn, the more the neural pathways will make connections with each other and the retention will be greater If you learn slower you'll forget more and spend more time revising The greatest way to create retention is to have many connections to a word or phrase, so in this regard the speedrunners will have an advantage Comment from : @cameronburnett9679 |

She is awesome Comment from : @linodiogo8236 |

I interviewed the best mathematician in the world and this is what works 😂 Comment from : @davidbrisbane7206 |
I have a question You say "listen to all kinds of stuff all the time" But there are different types of listening Assuming you understand 10 of what you are hearing Should you constantly pause, and try to translate and create flipcards, etc? Or you just plow through the whole things and maybe make some notes in the end and now you understand 12 and you go again What's the most effective way? Sometimes it feels kinda pointless to listen to something if you understand only every 10th word and you can't even grasp what topic the speaker is speaking about Should I just ignore this feeling? Comment from : @niftyhacker |
SHE HAD FUN AND FOUND A WAY TO FALL IN LOVE WITH THE PROCESS 🎉🎉🎉 Comment from : @Breaks4Life |
She has such a beautiful attitude about learning It’s such a unique thing nowadays to find someone who tackles “impossible tasks” and other challenges with such positivity and excitement ❤️ Comment from : @JayanXiao |
What I take from this is, you should learn whatever part of the language you find fun I study Hungarian and when I try to listen to stories I find I need comprehension of more words so that would be my focus Maybe in an interesting context Comment from : @kimf86 |
It's really incredible that someone can learn so many languages, but for me I'm having a bad time with my native language as well 😂😂 Comment from : @LovelyJumpRope-zq2jj |
Love how she says 'textbook' with a norwegian twang :) Comment from : @thehoogard |
If only there would be such method for biology or chemistry I honestly don’t know how to learn and remember them like we do in languages Because Ilys’s technique is so unique that learning becomes something you are doing for fun and results come just naturally Comment from : @Petra-v7s |

Hi Lemont (I always think if I'm writing you name correctly) Well, I just want to say that I have the same approach as her, but with 3 languages that I want to master at a native level (I teach them already all of them and I love it) Maybe it sounds stupid, but I try to turn myself into a Romance Languages native (as an already spanish native I know I can make the other ones mine too)brbrThat thing is that they are my hobby, my way to stay happy, I listen to them watching series dubbed, at the gym, eating and everything Other thing is that I have a sickness that has no cure, similar to cancer, and they are the only thing in life that makes me feel that I can keep going, so this conversation was really appreciated from my side thank you Comment from : @RáfaeL-RLCH |
To add a contradictory note to the chorus of «like»-dislikers, and to add one voice also to what pomperidus said: Her English is in no way tiring to listen to A bit of «like, like, like» takes a bit of getting used to, but nearly everyone who speaks English does it, especially in unscripted talk like this Comment from : @ellenorbjornsdottir1166 |
She reminds me for some reason of Anne Frank, I think the enlightened look She is an inspiration par excellence She has a very nice energy THANK YOU for the video A hug Comment from : @RacielLopezTorrez |

That thing of "having to learn my own mother tongue as an adult" is such the same what I felt when l was learning German I've even never been abroad and I managed to learn German around the c2 level and English c1 Of course there are words that I'm gonna learn when I arrive to the countries cause are pretty specific But I did pretty much the same as her and we are the same age I don't really know what to think Comment from : @alejandrogandini8048 |
It's actually amazing that her English accent is a bit influenced by Norwegian as well This is particularly the case for how she pronounces "s" Comment from : @hexiangwu4571 |
Useful info and thanks for providing it I did not enjoy the Netflix documentary style intro with dramatic buildup etc Comment from : @ChrithBraown |
Halfway throught the interview (which is great btw) and it's a bit off topic but According to the current state of knowledge in neuroscience, everyone is able to learn math (except maybe a very small percentage of the population that cannot conceptualize numbers or whatnot), just like everyone is able to learn a language Some might be better at it than others but by and large it's a matter of whether you bootstrap an interest for it Comment from : @guillaumeleguludec8454 |
Halfway through but I'll add another dimension: "the language learner's dilemma" which is spending so much time watching videos on how to learn a language that the learner never actually ends up becoming fluent in the target language Comment from : @AahhBurnedToast |
Wow Thanks Comment from : @mousaabkr |
Props! Kudos! Comment from : @Thalespoliglota |
Your videos are amazing—keep up the great work! Comment from : @KevKev-fe7lo |

13:20 People of English descent tend to learn pretty correct Swedish, but with an accent, which, as one says in France, "is so thick you could cut it with a knife" brbrWhat video are you speaking Swedish on? Comment from : @hglundahl |
12:50 - it's called adhd Comment from : @JohnMcclaned |

What an amazing interview Comment from : @Stephanie-gv8rh |
I've been using her methods to learn Norwegian, and I'm already at the high beginner kevel I have a tutor but mostly it's been for compréhensible input and now he's transitioned me to speaking because he thinks I'm ready I also send voice recordings to a language exchange friend and that's been fun too! Comment from : @sarahdawson975 |
