"You can always crop, but you can never add more" - 4 years later and we're in a different spot with AI :) It's interesting how things are changing with technology, if you're willing to embrace it Nice video, these were useful tips for a better composition I make these mistakes all the time and learn on the go, but the most important thing is to have fun while doing it Comment from : @Fil_Mo |

Unfortunately not always you can get the right light Sometimes you can be there only at that wrong time, only once in you life I try to do something with it in redactor, but it doesn't completely solve problem Comment from : @BimepWind |

I mostly take pictures of birds and insects to post them on my inat Now I feel bad about cropping the photos way too much I see the importance of the surroundings and other objects that might be captured in a shot after watching your video Comment from : @alz3217 |

14:07 To be honest the mountain shot with the sheep looks much more interesting to me than the following "good" examples you showed of some uninteresting landscapes Perhaps he could have changed the perspective a bit going closer to the ground or the sheep or made the entire image darker to unite all elements, but it's interesting at least Comment from : @JC-XL |
This is the most helpful video I have seen on this subject Please make more like this Showing very specific examples of what works and what doesn't really drives these points home Please make more videos like this Comment from : @emjay9323 |

I hear his critiques and am thinking about my beginner logic with the rule of thirds and how his thoughts go against that rule Comment from : @matador428 |

Great video, love the examples Thx for sharing your expertise Comment from : @adventurecoalition3690 |

Interesting and usefulbrbrThe difficulty is that everyone has different tastes While I tend to prefer your approach, it may be that the photographer actually captured exactly what they wanted and prefers it just as they shot it - and I can't say they are wrongbrbrThat's one of the beauties of a camera with more pixels and good optics You can shoot a bit too wide and crop down as you demonstrated in some of those images Comment from : @oldguy1030 |

Thank you, Nigel for this great video I'm an amateur photographer for probably, too long now Something like between 30 and 40 years I consider myself a lucky photographer because I never really learned the basics, but I've had some success' I'm going with, I have ADHD, and that's why I haven't taken a class sooner Anyway, I've been taking thousands of pictures with my IPhone 15 pro max, out of convenience All while my Canon, T5, DSLR sat in it's camera bag Well, now I'm ready to learn something new (to me) I am thankful for the experience I've had with my phone, however a seemingly majority of photographer's don't consider it true photography (so I think, anyway) I don't either so, I'm possibly projecting So, I'm not nearly ready for your Masters Class just yet Do you recommend any beginners classes? Hopefully you teach one as well and I just don't know it yet That'd be pretty awesome! Comment from : @scoobyj100slaker1000 |

Do you know you have a lot of good points to your pictures that you’re showing but you need to do something with your voice because you found you sound very squeaky like when you’re talking you need to have a muffle over your mic or something, but you ought to look into it to see what makes it sound better Comment from : @walterhall9682 |

To many details can over complicate an image and make it a little overwhelming It’s easier to center the photo around an object Comment from : @brendan4591 |

Even the slightest changes can make an image more balanced and pleasing to the eye Comment from : @brendan4591 |

I agree on most of your corrections but the one with the mountain divided from the earth by clouds was soooooo good and the whole point for me and the wow effect was exactly because it was with the ground but it was divided The sheep shouldn't be in the grass probably but all the rest 😮😮😮😮 Comment from : @lizzymccormic3328 |
Regarding the 6th: what if I want to show all of the elements there? Like an outlook from a window Imo, they're perfectly combined there If I go closer to the boat, I'd get a photo with a prominent boat, it may even look more artistic But it's not something I'd like to see in a summer house description because it'd contain much less informationbrThe points made are great I just think the photos chosen as examples aren't the best to demonstrate these points Comment from : @xpoback |
Sorry, I don't know a lot about photography, but I have a question: Is it your personal opinion and many people would disagree that there are certain problems on these pics? Or all the described mistakes are common and it's important not to commit them? Comment from : @simon_bbx8846 |
More evidence that photography is literally just point (maybe twist the lens a little) and shoot I can't see SHIT he's talking about He also didn't give justification for any of his strategies What is "such a big difference" and why? This whole craft is full of shit Kinda sucks I spent so much money on a camera I appreciate his conviction, though He really cares about what he's doing, and it's fully evident Comment from : @0xggbrnr |

i think balance is cringe Comment from : @cillno |

Been a photographer is like been a sound engineer and no matter how good u think u did or do ur job ,there are always goin to be people saying ohh u need work Herr ohhh u missed this Herr ohh u need to do this Lol u will never please another photographer Let me tell you something that alotttt of photographer and lot of sound engineer are missing Here Herr it is we are are different persons, we have different hearing differences, we have different eye sights and some people might not see full color or are far sighted blinded or who knows My point is that you will never never never get the perfect shot or the perfect mix in the live band Do your best and please the client that is ur most important work, don't worry about the neighbor who is a photoand is going to see ur work If u have knowledge and know what r ur doing Work with the education u have and give the costumer a smile Comment from : @SuAmigoElilegal |

That last image of the foggy forest with the huge dead trunk Do you guys have an opinion on whether or not it’s proper to photoshop that element out? I’m inclined to do so, especially now that art has to compete with ai (which has zero moral constraints) But do you guys feel like it’s even more important now days to stop photoshopping real life? Perhaps as a way to distinguish yourself away from ai? Comment from : @davidswanson5669 |

Great information! Comment from : @WildWyomingImaging |

This is very helpful I take too many shots on bright sunny days, because I like blue skies so much I wonder if you think there is value in afternoon and midday shots, or if I should just go out during the golden hour Comment from : @natet5959 |

This video is giving me "treating art as a quantifiable science" Great tips if you want to take a specific very style of photo, awful if you have a vision that doesn't align with what teachers at photography schools believe is a "great photo" Comment from : @SlashCampable |

Thanks for the lesson, Nigel This is the good stuff I do have a suggestion, though You’ve shown some compositions that don’t work, and for some you’ve shown an alternate take - brilliant But for others, I’m left wondering what I could have done differently when I’m up there on the location For each example you use, I’d love for you to show how to compose it differently Cheers Comment from : @AllisterBradley |
Thanks for this, Nigel! Comment from : @naomilimbaga9099 |

When people talk about different characteristics DRAWING your eye through the photo, is that a scientifically observable thing? Is it eye movement leading the brain or the other way around? Comment from : @SAMTHINKS2 |

Thanks Nigel Many great advice here One question though: if cropping solves some issues, it creates other ones when wanting to print the photos, as the ratio doesn’t match anymorebrHow to solve this (apart from framing correctly when taking the photo)?brCheers Comment from : @nickbianchi |
About the photo you give as a example at the end of the video of the blurred circles and the mountain in the background I’ve always been told not to cut my image in half by having a line dissecting the middle of the image Your eye struggles between the two half’s For me, had one side or the other been significantly larger with a crop It would be a better image I understand rules can be broken What makes this image a candidate for doing that? I come across this decision often in my own images Comment from : @markcrossno3007 |

When putting together a Cyberlink video/photoslideshow (as in my grandchildren's activities), I generally dissect a photo & incorporate multiple cropped images of the same "complicated" photo IT WORKS! RATHER THAN GOING AFTER A SINGULAR IMAGE for one impression It's refreshing & highlights the things missed by a viewing audience Comment from : @richardgreene5119 |
Your experiential discernment is as prominent as your compelling evidence of proper composition I subscribed to your relevance brBless God for your talent & gifted bent towards His perspective concerning His natural creation & technology! Comment from : @richardgreene5119 |
