Im buying a house without the garage its supposed to be a detached garage house in Edmonton, I plan to build the garage on my own and tear down a wall to make it open concept, total investment would be around 15,000 CAD, as its not a load bearing wall, what would be the ROI for that???

We are looking to purchase a home with an unfinished basement What is the best way to go about finishing it? To frame and drywall the concrete walls? Go industrial and leave the concrete walls? Drop ceiling or no drop ceiling? The bones are good We would like to finish the basement to live in while the upper floors are being renovated

Mortgage going down, valuing going up, debt free like Dave Ramsey teaches I share your same common sense mentality As Americans, we do need to learn to do more with our own 2 hands "It's money in the bank!" (To borrow your signature catchphrase lol!)

Not against diy remodel to help increase the value of your home but your home will never be an asset unless you are renting rooms or using as some kind of rental And I’m a bit confused how refinancing your home is an investment? It may give you cash in hand but you are paying interest on that aren’t you? I’m pretty inexperienced when it comes to all that so maybe I don’t understand exactly what your saying Your time is also worth something so even if you do a job yourself you are still using your time which should be calculated into your costs if you want to be accurate It may only cost $7k in materials but if I have to take 40-50 hours on a project?? Appreciate your content I’ve gotten a lot of value out of it
Comment from : Anthony Lind

Dan
Great advice thank you! Where does crawl space and new HVAC rank on this list? I understand that’s not remodeling, but does that come before remodeling or after?
Comment from : Dan

dlbrigg
Not everyone has the skill or mindset and motivation to be a DYI’er I have seen my share of home renovations or projects that were done by people who did not know what they were doing, and the project was done half-assed And the result looked lousy I am not trying to put these folks down or discourage, but you need to have confidence that you can do the project well ,and that it will look similar to the work that a professional would do, otherwise you could actually be devaluing your home These projects take a lot of work, and devotion, and you need to study/research what your going to be tackling before-hand (UTube is an excellent source for info… like here!), you will need to follow directions to a tea, and measure, measure, measure!! Lastly, if you are taking things apart, you may run into surprises that you did not expect Be prepared to take care of these surprises because they can happen Good luck in your future project endeavors!

I have a situation that I am not knowledgable enough to even begin to make a decision on I recently inherited a house from my father The house needs a lot of work I do not have any money to put into this house but I would like to sell it and make enough money to buy my own house I've had a lot of home brokers contact me wanting to buy the house for cash blah blah blah blah But in my mind I'm thinking that they would never give me enough money for this house the way it is Is this a situation that you can give me some advice on?

Hey Jeff! HELP!!!!! Just bought a triplex I didn't know that that there was major water damage to the roof and sidewall of the kitchen bathroom and bedroom of the 2 bedroom apartment To get the roof and walls done by a contractor will cost me 30k That's just to get them to fix but not finished (paint & drywall) Yes, I did inquire from multiple contractors and they all gave me the same quote Do you think that I can do this work or do half or let the pros handle this? I'm overwhelmed by this task because it is also an income property I'm also concerned about getting the permit from the local municipality Any advice?

Kristan Lepik
Thanks Jeff! Great advice (love the added humor with the “sermon”) We have been following this exact path for our own home Started with fresh paint inside and out on day 1 and over the last 8 years have replaced the floors, landscaping, added a third car drive, added a huge patio spanning end to end of our home with a last supper (10’) table, swing bed, remodeled baths, now we are in the home stretch (no pun intended) and finishing up our kitchen Reno that included tearing out a divider wall that thankfully was not load bearing…yes we triple checked before we started All along the way, we have had our now 13 year old daughter help out with some of the projects so she can learn some useful skills as well Your videos are so helpful and I have learned a lot more by checking out your content Thanks for sharing!

I've been slowly adding and remodeling my home recently and I'm on the floors right now but I'm not sure what to go with The entire house floor is all hardwood, some of it is finished some of it has been under carpet so long its rough and needs refinished Should I lay down a new floor on top of it or go through the process of refinishing it all? Also my floors are not perfectly level which is why I'm on the fence of layin a new floor down but I can't choose! Maybe some professional advice? :)

i'm all in on DIY, and frankly i've done dang near all there is to do, interior and exterior I am about to jump into vinyl siding but i have one issue; i RARELY see on utube that is how to handle penetrations, and i've seen hose bibs how-to but what about penetrations such as AC pipes, elect service entrance, gas pipes, etc all those you cannot slip a trim ring around?
Comment from : Kurt Anderson

Furio Giunta
Jeff your message is so powerful and true Unfortunately in many parts of the states there are tones of red tape requiring contractors for most of the work The homeowner can chip in a little of the labor but sometimes they take a risk with the local departments It keeps homes safe and up to code while keeping local contractors busy but it takes away from the power of the homeowner
Comment from : Furio Giunta

Saad Memon
Great advice Thanks
Comment from : Saad Memon

Trevor
I took Jeff's advice from an earlier video and have started on the outside of the house for the most part I paid to have my crawlspace encapsulated wish I had done it myself Had a new roof installed I did the siding myself and the wife is going to town on the landscaping The inside looks horrible! LOL But because we started on the outside, we are so motivated and all the neighbours love how our 55 year old house looks now We can work inside over the cooler days and winter Time to cut down some pine trees to allow the forest to breath Love you guys at HRV Thanks for all your help!

Would you offer a service where you do a quick facetime call and give your opinion on what to do with a remodel or certain type of space? Jeff, I have a question about hvac and return on investment! We have a 2004 hydronic boiler system with large convection style radiators for heat For cooling we have a couple window AC units Is adding the duct work, furnace and dental AC a good investment, one where I’ll get a return? I’m going to be paying a guy to do the duct work/install Not confident enough to put the ductwork in myself thats keeps the efficiency of a pro installer for hvac! If it helps I live in southern Ontario! Thanks, your videos are great you’ve helped me tons through my current basement renovation!

Jeff, I bought a "fixer upper" house almost a year ago and have been slowly renovating and remodeling it I started watching your videos before I bought the house and I knew it was what I wanted to do (even with no experience) I have learned a tremendous amount from your channel I'm getting ready to lay LVP flooring throughout the house but the current floor is tile Can I lay LVP right on top? Do I need to level the grout areas? Thank you!!

Hey Jeff, I'm in the middle of fixing my basement after getting an insurance payout and I've been hanging the drywall for the last couple days and I'm watching your drywalling/mudding videos in the evenings to get ready for that step On some of your more recent videos you mention that the branded buckets from that H store and the L store are pretty lightweight and I fully agree You mention mixing your mud in a bucket that you bought mud in and reusing that bucket again and again For those who are light on options for buckets I'd recommend that they purchase a "food grade" bucket they're tough and are available This is just an option I thought I'd share for others who have been told what NOT to get but may be unsure of what to look for

I’m NOT planning on selling so I don’t quite get how it would work for me It sounds like your saying “get paid to renovate your own house” I get how the value of my house increases with each upgrade, but it’s not like the bank writes me a check for them A loan is not the same as a payment, so (other than saving money on the cost) how am I NOT losing money anytime I renovate? Again, assuming I never sell

We need help on retiling a corner shower- it's not as simple as the traditional rectangular shower/bath combo Awkward knee walls and awkward angled cuts on the floor The vanity is built into the wall and the knee wall- as well as the bathtub Just a simple re-tile would require ripping the whole bathroom apart! A video on how to approach difficult situations would be helpful

Exactly the approach I am taking…I am 2 years into my DIY projects My background is not building it was advertising and commercial printing I’ve followed almost same procedures you are using Watched nearly every video you have made and a few others Self taught from videos Just finished upstairs flooring and remodeling except for large bathroom I also install a new Mr Cool AC unit upstairs It stays cold enough to hang meat on a Texas 102 degree day Bathroom has large vanity I’m replacing plus tub, toilet, shower and 2 closets Removed no structural wall by toilet 🚽 and shower to open them up Both in a enclosed cave before Ha outside house has been completed even tearing down a large tin shed 14’x20’ Tearing out over 200 ft of old chainlink fence plus dog runs and chainlink around the garden Installed all wood fencing and totally opened up the whole yard Garden is now above ground 24”x 36 ft Along back fence Lower floor of the house is complete including 2 bathrooms and kitchen…3 bedrooms and a beautiful office area Stairway with 2 landings and a nice hallway Completely redone with steps matching the flooring 14 ft ceiling in living area 12’ ceilings in upstairs bedroomSo not exactly easy New 50 gallon water heater plus plumbing also added freeze proof additional faucet in the back yard The house is beautiful now including 3 porches All new screens built also All work done by myselflots more outside I haven’t mentioned and inside Your never too old to learnI am 77 years old The value has now 3 times what it was I did invest in the proper tools and used the garage as my workshop I also now do all my AC work now…just finished new fan and capacitor plus serviced it That’s for the great DIY videos If a 77 year old guy can do it anyone can Your videos were my inspiration Thanks for all the great videos

Good day, Jeff I just installed an air conditioning system in my 1950s home The attic is small so, I am thinking of using spray foam to simultaneously seal penetrations and insulate the attic Do I need 2 different FROTH-PAK (sealant/insulation) to do this or anyone of them will work?

Thoughts on building up attached garage into new rooms (I have room to eventually build another garage on property)? The what is the true cost of a cantilever extension to a room and is it DIYable? ROI for these? Thanks a lot!

Hi Jeff I absolutely agree with you! Without knowing it, you “helped” me update my bathroom this winter I didn’t move the plumbing, except for moving the shower drain line over and repairing the floor joist the previous remodeler cut through for the old shower drain! I learned about Ditra from you, and hope it helps protect my very 1st floor tile job in my 1935 cottage My $1500 + my time investment looks 1500 better than the bisque beige 1980s bathroom I used to have Thank you, Jeff
