I completely agree with you I am French and I am 60 years old I learn English, Spanish, Italian and Portuguese just for my pleasure I think even if I don’t use it in my life, it’s good to get my brain working My mother and father were affected by Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s and I don’t want to have the same thing So I think it’s important to get my brain working! I am disappointed when I tell people that I am learning a language, and they respond with 'You can only learn a language while you are a child' That is obviously wrong, but for a reason that I think is too often overlooked: Grammar Children may have an advantage in terms of absorbing the language through listening and attempts to speak, BUT when it comes to understanding and predicting the behaivour of a language, children are poorly equiped; they must exhaust every option and combination until they are proven incorrectGrammar, at the expense of complexity, is the complete blueprint to the design of language, by understanding grammar rules, adults can dispose of 99 incorrect constructions Brains > brute force Comment from : @craigs6045 |

Brilliant how you analogize the topic of older language learners with your game of old-timer hockey My greatest takeaway from this video is to not approach a language as if it were a memory game Thanks, Steve Comment from : @avq5 |
I don't agree A child does not "think", he just imitates the adults and he learns about situations intuitively and say things when they need to be said, without knowing the exact meaning, That comes gradually That is an effortless process as it is automaticbrWhen you are older, your brain is already cluttered with soooooo much information that you have been accumulating over the years, that it has to slow you down I know 3 languages perfectly which I learned when young with minimal difficulties, I am now 61 and an learning a 4th language and I AM struggling Maybe it's only me Comment from : @bsegers52 |

Two bad i didn't have any of those lol Now I'm 22 and just learning my first second language Comment from : @nubemuffin |
I couldn't agree more All of what you say makes sense It is exactly as I think and feel about it, though many people seem to have biased or simply unsound or undeveloped ideas about language learning I have just finished my first year of Danish, together with twenty-something university students etc I am sixty, and there's no marked difference, though I tend to think I had a kind of 'edge' when I was younger That seems to have disappeared, but this is not important Keep up the good work! Comment from : @Lousysalsero |
you make sense Comment from : @julieviquiera3135 |
It probably originates from hearing some elderly people whose voices have changed with age That does happen, although I don't know if it happens to everyone I'm 66, and my hearing and voice are better than ever One reason is that I'm simply more conscious of how I sound, and of the possibilities present in my voice There's so much to learn, and I'm glad there is Learning is what keeps our brains functioning When you stop learning, Oh-oh Comment from : @shaggybreeks |
YOUR 66?!?!?! Comment from : @CollectorWorth |

What's LingQ? Comment from : @Lindormber |
@ehngage1707 Just get on LingQ for your Swedish Comment from : @Thelinguist |
@lingosteve Swedish, so far i'm enjoying the immersion method with rosetta stone But I feel like when I'm done with it, I still won't know how to piece together senteces and things There are some sentences that appear that I don't fully understand, but I know what picture they're talking about
Comment from : @ehngage1707 |
@ehngage1707 Which language? I always use a bi-lingual dictionary but do not translate the whole text I am reading I try to piece together what it means and keep going Comment from : @Thelinguist |
Hey steve, if I am trying to learn a language and I have material in that language and am translating it to my native tongue, is that wrong? to build a vocabulary? I was told not to do this, but I don't see another way to learn vocabulary Comment from : @ehngage1707 |
I am quite sure your opinion could be proved scientifically You've trained your brain in a specific way all your life; it is something what actors do with theirs, that is why most of them are able to learn long texts even at high age
Inspiring ideas, thank you! Comment from : @Montanius69 |
@debaiona Yes, I know what you mean Although I don't have a problem to talk to strangers, I think that when travelling abroad we are not so much exposed to the language! Funny thought - It's easier to learn a foreign language sitting at home, isn't it? :) Comment from : @ko4536 |
wow, I would have never guessed you were 66 I'm 21 and you seem more energetic than me lolol

@rsloma71 One day I will learn Polish, but first I have to get my Czech to a better level thanks! Comment from : @Thelinguist |

@lingosteve Kan du prata Svenska? Comment from : @Myega |
@ko4536 I agree with this I learned more Russian when I was studying it on my own in London than I did once I moved to Moscow I suppose it was because actually speaking to people in Russian was very intimidating, and so I didn't particularly want to speak Do you find the same thing? Comment from : @debaiona |
El limite no es la edad, creo que el limite es creer que existe En el cerebro nuevas conexiones neuronales se adecuan para aprender lo que nos gustesaludos gracias Steve Comment from : @soleaguirre100 |

Just wanted to say thanks for your videos- it's so helpful to hear your perspective on language learning I studied 3 languages in school; I did well, but their approach of emphasizing memorization of vocabulary, irregular conjugations, etc was so stressful that it sucked all the pleasure out of the process I found you, Moses, and others about a year ago, and it's made such a difference; your approach in particular is very enjoyable to me, and I'm always interested to hear your thoughts Comment from : @roman1615 |
Just sharing my opinion, Age is an extremely influential factor, but only up until adolescence because they absorb so easily After that, the learning skills sorta levels off Other than that, I feel it's more about exposure and experience I mean that I feel the impression that the learning-skills decreases from age comes more from those who have no foreign language engagement until their older ages, while young people have both English and Spanish classes in school, so the process is there Comment from : @ThisIsNoise17 |
Nice video! It's good knowing life doesn't end after 30, both when it comes to languages and otherwise:) Comment from : @Snyblind |
@lingosteve Hello Steve! I Could you upload a video about "language interference" and "switching between languages" ? Thank you Comment from : @jensito90 |
good speech, I want to say that there is something important learners should know it, and it happens to me, sometimes people cannot get the information fast, so they think as if they're stupids but it's not true, I think if someone cannot get the information fast, it makes him/her be more smart in the future, because he/she will think very much in every point to see more than what normal person did I look at myself now and see how I'm better than people who were help me when I was a beginner Comment from : @serajstyle |
