You don't use the orienting lines in your compass to align the grid lines on the map if you already oriented the map to north with your compass

I believe that you oriented the map to TRUE NORTH not magnetic north Your compass was zeroed to N without the declination angle You may have forgotten to take into consideration the GM angle

When using your compass to get a heading, that would be a magnetic heading, I’m guessing the compass card would show a true heading less the magnetic variation for the location
