Have to agree with the previous comment; I liked the 'waffle' Giving a bit of history is always welcome Comment from : @davidelliott9030 |
Great videos But please don't give air to the thought that they don't teach history in school anymore Of course they do But whether it is the kind of history that is useful against that which is mandated date cramming - think wives of HVIII - is a separate debate Comment from : @hendox7117 |
Why did you close that gate It will confuse other hikers Just leave it open The council might send rangers to close it after a certain hour Comment from : @bobbylow175 |
Very informative and love the waffling! Comment from : @fredbustin3788 |

Will watch this laterbe a good refresher course etcAs a South African who has never been to the UKit seems hilarious that one can get lost as to us the UK seems so smallBut of course thats just an immediate thought until one thinks of Scotland and WalesWe are hearing terrible things about the hijacking of the UK and the disgusting treatment of you BritsI wish you well and hope you will rid your country of this invasionLiving in a large country like SA and having hiked it for many years its heartbreaking to see how what was one of the safest countries in the world now restrict our movements due to rampant crime and murderOf course as a tourist you will recieve protection and whitewashed tours but the reality is quite differentI am sorry to bring this type of message to your programbut I would hate to see the same happen in the UK countrysideLook after yourselves and if you guys are not scared of the "Englishmans enemy" (the African sun) I can highly reccomend Namibia as good hiking terrainespecially from Windhoek south to the Orange riverNorth is wonderful too but its vehicle safari area unless you dont mind being introduced to predators as part of their menuStay Britishstay the good people we have come to knowIf you guys could have spent time in the old Rhodesia before it became the mess called Zimbabweyou would have met Englih descendants at their best and seen what they achievedKeep on hiking Comment from : @JohnDuPreez-r4z |

The army taught me to put the red in the shed it never actually occurred to me that it doesn't matter what way the map is orientated 😂 Comment from : @rileyhartley8371 |
I was enjoying the historical waffle lol Comment from : @jsano2754 |
I like the waffle It's quality material Comment from : @misterbonzoid5623 |

Love this guy An expert with no egoistical pseudo special forces posturing Waffle shows interest and joy in what one's doing and wanting to share one's joy and knowledge Brian Cox expands his explanations too as he loves his subject Comment from : @hs964 |
What keeps confusing me after watching these kinds of videos, is that sometimes some people align the compass grid lines to the map's when taking a bearing, and others put the red in the shed Am I missing something? Do you put the red in the shed if the map is oriented and align to the grid lines when its not? Comment from : @hectorgarza6679 |
Interesting tid bit on orienting your map The military taught me to orient my map first using land beacons before even opening my compas It removes some of the "stupid factor" if you can see that your bearing is actually going in the direction you intend to go Comment from : @BB-nw6cs |
One of the most interesting thing about your walks through the country-side is the stories you tell about the area your are going through My ancestors are from Derbyshire I would love to see you walking through that area in a video I've looked at it via Google Earth, but Google Earth doesn't let you go off the road in "street view" But it looks like beautiful country-side So maybe you could "Walk and Waffle" through there sometime :o) Comment from : @neilsheldon8355 |
Hi Wayne can you help with the crossed winds rules please? Comment from : @theproclaimer4000 |
We love the waffle! Comment from : @vjvallance |
Just came across your channel a few weeks ago You have a beautiful way of explaining simple and more complex map reading procedures Please don't stop those little anecdotes and lovely stories intermingled in the videos Comment from : @sm-xd1wr |
As an ML I agree with you entirely The map shows which way North is and that's all you need Anyone disagreeing is not understanding the point you are making Thanks for that bit of history on the end about why we call it Orientating as I didn't know that so learnt something new there I'm teaching some Army Cadets next weekend how to Orientate a map using the compass so I'll drop that in there! Btw you do the best vids on navigation I've ever seen I take my hat off to you sir! Comment from : @HW-kf7hi |
🙏 Comment from : @DejanStojicevic-c8j |
Sir, I am going to subscribe BECAUSE of the waffling Comment from : @ladyyatexel |
That is exactly the way I was taught The example given was if the weather is really bad and you had to find shelter from the prevailing wind , you are very unlikely be able to orientate your map , so just line up your start and finish points , and turn the compass to point North the lines on the compass will follow the lines on the compass brbrWhen I come out of the shelter I simply walk and rotate until I am ON that bearing brbrNever failed yet Comment from : @A2Z1Two3 |
It's not waffle if it's interesting History is always interesting and why we use certain words always gives an insight into that history History is also worth preserving and "wisom of the ages" is not just some throwaway line Comment from : @Chris_the_Muso |
I love the waffling! Don't edit it out please Comment from : @gregnewberry4813 |

i love it i just love it thank you smart man very smart history is one of the most important things one can learn Comment from : @mrpopinfresh-w6h |
What? I don’t get how you’re getting a true bearing “I rotate the bezel until the orienting lines in the center are pointed directly at the map”… ?? Comment from : @jessegudenschwager7949 |
Your waffling was wonderful! Thank you for making orienteering much more fun and useful than most channels Cheers! Comment from : @michaelnovack2217 |
Please continue 'waffling', it adds a lot to map reading, it also helps put the landscape in a historic context, and makes tech talk less dry 😉 Comment from : @dreamcatchersong |
Back in the days when being a forward observer involved binos, a compass and a protractor you never oriented our maps The compass was declinated to point to true North since the grids were born off of true North So you shot your bearing to a feature matching the contour lines, lined up your protractor and drew your azimuth Didn't matter which way your map was orientedbrbrTL;DR - Good explanation here Comment from : @KyleCowden |
👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍 Comment from : @FranklinPhan |
Another good video Thanks Comment from : @tomconway8881 |
I notice someone making this statement on your videos too Seemed rather strange to me that they would Thanks for helping to clear things up Comment from : @WR3ND |
Really enjoy these informative videos Have been walking in the mountains of northern Arizona for years and have learned many tips What is the host's name? Comment from : @ThePatrickgavin |
Fantastic video It would be great if you made some hiking videos, taking us to some places of interest like Nappa Cross, explaining the history or points of interest, but more importantly, showing the navigation skills in progress as you go along Your tutorial videos are great, but seeing the navigation process in use 'live' along the journey is a great way to repeat the lessons in the context of an actual hike, if you get what I mean - just an idea 😊brbrYou have inspired me to get out with map and compass, and to enjoy the satisfaction of successfully navigating a hike without having to fall back on gps Comment from : @Shreek17 |
Waffle away, Map Man! I found the orien part fascinating! Comment from : @SuzannahShoshannah516 |
Orienting the map to align with visible landmarks avoids a cognitive somersault Walking navigation is not the same planning an artillery barrage You rarely need better than 5 degree accuracy if you are using Linear Feature technique which is what you should be doing Comment from : @hallstewart |
came for the orient, stayed for the waffles Comment from : @ar8850 |
You're the kind of guy I'd pay money to sit down in an audience and listen to you waffle for several hours Comment from : @Asdayasman |
Waffle is a very nice and informative addition to your brilliant content 👍🏻 Comment from : @nueschi |
Very enjoyable video and nothing that needs cutting out Great live filming much better than just a sanitised version of it Comes across as having a wide knowledge and thoughtfulness Comment from : @langdalepass |
The map is the frame of reference Moving the frame reference does not alter a reading taken against it Comment from : @bvds2007 |
You know, there's all these "survival" videogames, I really wish one of them would incorporate proper usage of a mapbrInstead of just making you die of thirst in 5 minutes and starve to death in 10 Comment from : @Umbra_Nocturnus |
Really enjoyed your historical digression Comment from : @JohnSmith-zy1ur |
Love the waffling! adds charm to the explanation and history Comment from : @douga2665 |

I wish I was your neighbor☮ Cheers!!! Comment from : @TheBrad605 |
Love it - waffle and 👌all Comment from : @johnk3427 |
How long does it take to orient your map, when you take your bearing the compass is pointing the way you need to go , taking the bearing with the map upside down could lead to some people linning the compass needle north to south and heading off in the opposite direction as that would be the direction on the map Comment from : @redcruben |
As an American, I appreciate the history lesson about your country If you haven’t already done one, would you do a video about magnetic north, true north etc? Comment from : @stephenparis495 |
I love waffles☺ Nice video! Comment from : @frankwitte1022 |
Good video, I reference to lakes ponds power lines roads streams rivers buildings stone walls town boundaries and elevation markers Etc Comment from : @dm9860 |
I always love giving 8 and 10 grid references rather than 6 it's more fun to watch 😂😂 Comment from : @cliffyh466 |
When you stop the waffle I stop watching It Luverly, its interesting, its stimulating, its FUN, please don’t stop👍🏼🦘🇦🇺 Comment from : @jimjasper9851 |

Thank you for the clue to identifying gateways Comment from : @rchas1023 |
Irrelevant means there is no elephant Everyone knows that Comment from : @vipertwenty249 |
Loved the video and the history lesson! brI've only ever used a map protractor for taking grid bearings I use my compass almost exclusively for shooting azimuths Comment from : @ianstewart5125 |
The compass appeared in Europe in the 13th century but long ocean voyages beyond the Pillars of Hercules had been undertaken thousand years prior to that (Tin was mined in SW Britain and traded to Anatolia in the Bronze Age) Any map orientation prior to the adaption of the compass must have involved dead reckoning and celestial bodies Comment from : @professorsogol5824 |
Certain maps, particularly USGS if I'm not mistaken, have grid north declination marked which you need to add into the math for magnetic declination when using this method Thoroughly check the legend, scaling plate, and compass rose to see if this information is published on the map Comment from : @williamsekely1476 |
I recommend buying a declination adjustable compass Comment from : @justinzago1536 |
