This is why I only buy old solid states with no digital stuff or tube amps It's more expensive usually but I know they'll last longer than anything with a computer chip in it and sound better too

Brad the digital sections to repair them they just throw entire new boards at them, no replacing caps or anything, just plug in a new one

A decent microscope, a decent rework hot air station, a decent amount of patience I had to fix a lot of SMD boards, almost always there are leaky caps (SMD variety), cold joints and if anything with custom firmware or any custom ASIC goes, utterly unfixable On top of not having any schematic most of the time Swapping out opamps is actually easier than with thru-hole components, just heat up, tweezers make go fly across the room, clean a little bit, new ic, solder, done

Do you do a Crate GT200 DSP 2X12? It doesn't turn on, no blown fuse, the DSP is a separate circuit board Hybrid tube/solid-state 2x12 It's been kept in an Anvil case pretty much since new Modeling amps are use and throwaway I do have an early modeling amp, the original Roland Micro Cube I love it When it's done, I'm planning on coverting it to a tube amp I have a schematic that was drawn out using a single ended hand wired tube amp using 5878 and 5672 tubes I looked all over the place and couldn't find how to get in touch with you

If your buy one of these amps, buy all the warranty you can find if you plan to keep it These were not designed to be worked on - other than perhaps component replacement, ie, if something on the board is dead, replace the board

Had a Marshall Code 25 or 50 kept blowing the fuse on the power supply Turns out it was common amongst some of them I emailed Marshall directly because I couldn't find a schematic for the power supply, they wouldn't send me one because I wasn't a Marshall dealer, and wouldn't even sell me a new one Last modeling amp I'll own I prefer simplicity these days, glad that happened because I relied on that thing too much for my tone

Yeah , I’ve got two stacked in the corner One is the VT100X a guy gave me after it sat in his trailer for a year Only got used twice But never worked even once for me And no tech in the country will touch it with a fifty foot pole

Wait a minute What was the symptom? While I agree that boards with lots of surface mount ICs would be a major hassle to track down a defect, the symptom could point to a power supply failure, or output amp failure Both of those circuits are relatively easy to repair I've made money and lost money repairing modeling amps It depends on the symptoms and the failure history of the particular model

The actual obstacle is probably like a line 6 I looked at, company will not supply you with tech data to work on them But I would still take a look as it is just as likely to be simple, versus some kind of exotic digital problem A tossup Just don't make any guarantees to customer

Smart call, if it has IC's and PCBoards I dont touch them brSometimes I'll look into it and it's obvious a resistor is burnt or electrolytic is fried and it's a simple fixed but if that doesn't fix it, sorry

Yeah… had a similar Vox amp years ago (2003) that I wasted a bunch of cash on One of the boards went out within a year Took it to a reputable amp wizard and he immediately looked exhausted just seeing that hunk of crap coming through the door I just gave it to him to salvage whatever he could Lesson learned…

a modeling amp is basically a computer with a high-powered speaker brto work on that stuff, you have to be 2M repair qualified, and have a special work scope to see those TINY traces and ic leads

Why are people so scared to work on things with ICs? ha IC's honestly hardly EVER go bad its usually a cold solder joint, or a loose wire connection with these types of electronics Not saying they are better, cause they DEF arent lol, but just not a whole lot of parts that fail on them Now things with BGA chips on the other hand haha those are a PINA to fix lol

I once owned one of those VTX amps 20 watt great little amp but the usb socket broke took it to the local tech, one it was getting the parts two the cost of would be just as much as the amp, that's how they are designed so I sold it the amp did work but to access the tone room was through the USB ,

Basically a Bluetooth speaker with a built-in guitar amp digital simulator No way to fix that if the fault is outside of the analog circuit Some people could troubleshoot it, but the question is if you can even get any of those ICs let a lone the programs that you will most likely need to load onto some of them brAnd these ain't the simple and rugged old school digital ICs from the 80s which basically last for ever either brIn the end, it will cost more than just replacing the whole board if you can even get ahold of one

I'm always thinkin why these new companies won't make some simple design combo amps that would be with circuit that's easy repair and build and you can sell it cheap Every component from the mid-fi qualty/price range Basic speaker No digital but it could be transistor couse it's cheaper to make and just fiddle the circuit and EQ to fit the speakers tone No this fancy shit that can't be repaired
