hi I have cerebral palsy and was born in a small town MI in 1976 this movement which was the framework of DEI moved the needle forward for me to be mainstreamed even though nobody wanted me in their school,,,,, you young ones don't even know what it took to get to the ADA which took 20 more yearsI too went to a camp in Grand Rapids miduring the pandemic, i was actually able to speak to Judy Also, Jim and tell them what they meant to a small town girl with Cerebral Palsy------this history is so freaking importantyoung ones do not take inclusion for granted so many people fought and literally died for me to be included and not only allowed to survive but also thrive in society We have so much more work to doI have worked in the community off and on RIP Judy I love you Comment from : @damianwildfong7278 |

Thank you for thisbrbrI have recently discovered a wonderful book called " Why are you pretending to be normal?" and it was light bulb moment how every one of us is made to feel we can't ask for help with whatever we are struggling with because of the fear that we will be rejected, censored or controlled We all struggle with something and this kind of documentary gives us all the language, the mentoring we all need to advocate for our needs and to encouragfe us to refuse to take part in the inner ring mentality which wants to restrict respect and human rights to a tightly defined cookie cutter minoritybrbrwarmest regards, brbrKaren in Cambridge Comment from : @karenrodgers56 |

Hi everyone, brbrI wanted to share a little about myself I'm on the autism spectrum, which means my brain works a little differently than most Here's what that might mean for you:brbrSensory Sensitivity: Sounds, lights, or textures might bother me more than usual I might need to wear noise-canceling headphones or avoid certain placesbrSocial Challenges: I might find it hard to understand social cues or make eye contact I might say things bluntly or take things too literallybrSpecial Interests: I might get really into specific topics and talk about them a lotbrRoutine: I like routines and predictability Changes can be stressful for mebrWhat you can do to help:brbrBe patient and understandingbrUse clear and direct languagebrAvoid loud or crowded places if possiblebrGive me time to process informationbrLet me know if something is bothering youbrI appreciate your willingness to learn more about me It helps us build a stronger relationshipbrbrThank you, Comment from : @izaachecht |

Oh thank God a way to watch without Netflix I go around trying to get staff in the group home I manage to watch this so they understand that what we do is the extension of someone's activist movement Maybe placing specific faces to those people will make them feel more like stewards of that, and let that guide how we act in and out of work Comment from : @paulthebeau7061 |
|
I love that this is made accessible to all, even non-Netflix subscribers! Comment from : @MasonCulkin |

We still need this camp We need multiple camps like this across the country They should be protected from commercialization & corporate take overbrbrThis made me cry What this camp meant, & what these people did was so beautiful I had vision most of my life I was also born too late in '84 I feel like I missed out on something greatbrbrAt the same time, the world outside of that community at the time was not so great I am lucky to have gone blind in a world made better by what they didbrbrBut We still need that energy We need it turned up to 11 There are still problems The big one in my mind is the rights of parents with disabilities People who quite often lose custody of their kids just because they have a disabilitybrbrWe also need that community I feel like we've lost it We have CILs I work at the CIL here in San Marcos, TX, but people do not know about us There is supposedly a blind community, but outside Texas School for the Blind & Visually Impaired & The Criss Cole Rehabilitation Center in Austin, I have not encountered it I am a student at Texas State in San Marcos, & I have not heard about any student organization for blind people or people with disabilities in generalbrbrI'm rambling a bit Bottom lie, I loved this documentary I am sharing it with as many people as I can, Comment from : @chrispytheBlindSocialist |

I have mild cerebral palsy, and while I am younger than the people featured in this documentary, I'm old enough to remember when the world was much less accessible than it is now brbrIt's striking to me how many of the central figures in this documentary are dead, as well Most of them would be younger than my parents, both of whom are living brbrWe still have a long way to go It's going to be especially important in the future, because whether most people want to admit it or not, COVID is a mass disabling event Comment from : @shgstewart4674 |
|
"You know, people around here feel small enough most of the time And when somebody has to scrub their balls they'll probably feel even smaller"brThat hit me, yung sage Comment from : @sluglife9785 |

What touched me the most, is the power of intersectionality! All of our beautiful human sisters and brothers! Together, against the power of a system that is not kind to those who are different! Physically disabled guys, the Black Panthers, Vietnam vets, all of US together could achieve everything! Did you hear the common message, clearly voiced by the heros? " I AM a man, woman, able, worthy"brThis documentary, touched me, a "white" German-American US Army vet (with invisible physical AND mental disabilities,) so deeply! Comment from : @irishart1361 |
|
This was such a powerful documentary ❤️ Comment from : @razingflame |

I just found Crip Camp on Netflix and watched a tiny bit and plan to watch the rest tomorrow! Thanks for sharing this Comment from : @rlross49 |

I’m 45f, TBI from birth and in a wheelchair So many of the experiences I have had, and the rights and accessibility I expect are because of people like these and they have my utmost thanks!brI grew up around many people with disabilities of all types and forms It was wonderful having people I could relate with And many times it was easy to take it for granted to have that sort of connection and not feeling like an outsider brbrOne of the best experiences in my life was Easter Seals camp as a kid The best year was when I did their special “Teen Independance Camp” Instead of going boating or hiking or other things, we had seminars and lessons about how to be as independent as we could be as we transitioned out of Easter Seals (children only) into the much less funded March of Dimes (adults) We were taught how to look for housing, how to advocate for our care, how to handle so many adult situations It was amazing and fun brThe best was when they brought in a self defense instructor to work with each of us as to how we could protect ourselves with what we were able to each do brIt gave us a power that we had never felt before A feeling that, yes, we could make it, we could do it, there were ways to be independent brbrI see young kids now who are disabled and am so happy they have it even better than I did And I had it better than the generation before (this film) There is still a long way to go but thanks to people like those shown here and many others, we had chances and experiences they didn’t brThey saw the possibilities and recognized they deserved more…and they fought for it brThank you always❤ Comment from : @gdtestqueen |

I also would like to add that I've been going to these social/support groups for adults on the milder end of the autism spectrum, and we meet twice a month every month of the year And I let the adults from group know about Judy's passing and what she's known for So with that being said, I did make the suggestion that at our next group meeting, me and the other adults on the spectrum take a moment of silence at our meeting for Judy Heumann Comment from : @Christinafan2002 |
