Me and my wife were smart about our wedding, we got married in her hometown so since everyone basically knew each other we got everything dirt cheap (relatively speaking) We had a turkey dinner for our reception in an old museum she used to work at And everyone got to stay in cabins It was amazing

You can have a lovely wedding in your backyard with homegrown flowers and catering from your local restaurant I did, and my friends were telling me iten years later/i that it was the best party they ever went to My dress was a gift from a friend of my mother's who was a dressmaker; she also made three plain dresses for my maids and I gave them the dresses as well as a pile of ribbons and trim and told them to decorate the dresses any way they wanted to - the results were great My brother, a photographer, did the photos, my uncle did the video, two musician friends provided the music, etc The whole thing cost less that $1K, and I wouldn't have had it any other way

I have a less exciting explanation for why "weddings" cost more From someone in the industry There are 22-ish Saturdays per year considered prime for events (good weather, no major holiday, etc) Event professionals do 85 or more of their work on those 22 days Unlike normal businesses thay operate 5 to 7 days a week making sales Supply & demand here necessitates higher prices for the key dates, Saturdays -> You doing a party/wedding/anything on a Tuesday? I absolutely promise at least 30 to 40 of the overall cost will come down Now, imagine throwing a wedding on a Tuesday, most people don't imagine that Hence people planning weddings always take the most critical business dates

Wedding dresses are a complete con I worked in the fashion industry for well over 35 years making of all other things wedding dresses Damn well over priced will never fit right (brides to be diet so much just before the wedding) therefore dress too big and has to be 'emergency altered' ie; totally butchered so it fits as the last fitting was three months ago And I'm not talking about the parlour down the high street, I'm talking about the large department stores in London's west end Go for something you like, sew a bit of lace on it and there ya go brAfter all, you only going to wear it once

I got married during COVID in a courthouse with no guests allowed Avoided the family pressure for a big wedding I considered having a ceremony later, but it just didn't seem worth it My ring was also relatively cheap because it was a resold vintage, so no new diamonds required
