I tried a bottle of Monkey Shoulder - once It seemed obvious to me why it was cheaper, bland I'd rather pay the extra and get something more accommodating Comment from : @Ozone280 |
I don't understand how americans aren't all complete alcoholics with the whiskey prices you payYes I'm jealous! In Canada at $56Monkey Shoulder is overpriced and not a "starter whiskey"it's a great blend for an any day whiskey but so is The Famous Grouse at $40 Unfortunately in the land of the TAX Glenmorangie is $75 Johnnie Black(small bottle) is $65 Glennfiddich is $80 Balvennie 12 (a favorite) has gone from $65 to $129 in the last 10 years Highland park 12 is $90 Bruichladdich is also $90 So because of Canada's heavy handed tax regulationsthey are all "special occasion" scotches in Canadawhich is another reason (other than health) that so many people are drinking less Comment from : @tobym9045 |
I agree on ice with j walker black Needs it The monkey doesn’t need it Bought a bottle out of curiosity and was so surprised It vaguely reminds me of Johnny green Nice vid, thank you Comment from : @hellhound59 |
Johnny walker black to me is still undrinkable Ashes and youthy, green, bourbon Just can't get into it Comment from : @rc121crx |
I feel like I must be in the minority for not liking Monkey Shoulder at all I don't know what it is, but I can't get into it I do love islay scotches though Comment from : @noahsvideos |
I mean it's a nice line up, but other than the Johnnie Walker I wouldn't call any of these "starter whiskies" Again, excluding the JW: one, they are all significantly more expensive than Monkey Shoulder, and secondly, Monkey is a blend, the rest of these are single malts All of which vary wildly in character from a basic blend AND each other Not really sure what you were going for herebut as far as affordable blends go personally I lean into Famous Grouse It's a decent blend and a go to when I don't want to break into the more expensive single malts I actually prefer it to the Monkey Shoulder Or the JW Comment from : @mmtx73 |
I’m nearly 70 and will try 2 on your list to try Thanks My favourite is Ardbeg ten It’s glorious Comment from : @england902 |
JB Black was a very nice whisky when i used to buy it for $4 a bottle from the American Embassy commissary in Santiago, Chile in 1973 Don't know about these days Comment from : @BDCF100 |
I've never understood why Monkey Shoulder gets the praise that it does I bought a bottle back in 2018 (or thereabouts) and thought it was a pretty damn crappy product, to be honest There are a million whiskies I'd rather drink Yes, Monkey Shoulder is cheap, but if you pay a LITTLE bit more, you can get something MUCH better That's what I think anyway And I agree with the recommendations in the video here Even Black Label and HP 12 (both of which have taken a dive in terms of quality, esp Black Label) are probably still going to be a better choice than Monkey Shoulder I know I'd rather have them myself Comment from : @TheSynthNinja |
How about leaving the whisky description text on for longer, its too fast for me to read Comment from : @davidfitzgerald4559 |
5:03 Speaking of saltiness in whiskies, how can we forget the Talisker 10? Comment from : @ya4dang1 |
I am perfectly happy with Dewar's 12 tyty Comment from : @firstgensps |
they recommended me highland park one time didnt like it black label is good i think its really fruity Comment from : @arnocastelein5111 |
U can keep jw black label but all the rest are good starters! Comment from : @MatthewBritnell |
Scotch is so bloody expensive; Monkey Shoulder is not cheap by any means I drink Monkey Shoulder because it doesn't taste like a bandaid! It's not peated and comes from the Speyside which is known for the lack of peat in their Scotch While it's a blend, its delicious especially with proper club soda Comment from : @KelleyChambers-z1f |
Johnnie Walker Black is my go-to when showing someone Scotch The Glennfiddich 12 was sooo disappointing Comment from : @YoungShag |
Thanks Bill, another great option for beginners of whisky is Compass Box Orchard House, very fruity ( Apple, pear), some vanilla and some honey Comment from : @marcovanboekel7419 |
Very interesting video Have tried some of these whiskies and am in agreement with your thoughts 🥃🥃🥃 Comment from : @kade150 |
OMG those r experienced drinks 😂 Comment from : @chakravudh |
Glen 12 is my go to if I want the old familiar drink Comment from : @swind2492 |
Glenmorangie 10 or Glenfiddich perpetual vat 01 which one is best ? Comment from : @sameenperera3808 |
100 Glenmorangie and Glenfiddich are a better pick than Monkey Shoulder Glenmorangie is more inviting and only a little more expensive Glenfiddich is a little different, interesting, a little pricy though Both are better than Monkey Shoulder Comment from : @galaxyguy4522 |
Here in Canada, those other Scotches are considerably more expensive than Monkey Shoulder Comment from : @goonbelly5841 |
I’m new to whisky in the sense that I have obviously known whisky for years and now I have decided to become a bit nerdy about it So I have to bought some fairly inexpensive whiskies over the last year just to get a feel of what I like My favorites of these have been the Old Pulteney 12 and the Glen Garioch Founders Reserve Can you or anyone reading this come with suggestions for whiskies with a sort of similar taste profile but at a higher level and price All suggestions will be appreciated Oh and by the way I haven’t tried heavily peated whisky yet, but I imagine a Port Charlotte 10 will be a good choice as a start point? Greetings from Denmark Comment from : @klaushaunstrupchristensen7252 |
Monkey Shoulder tastes better than all the other blended scotches on the thumbnail Comment from : @JonahGhost |
No se puede comparar una botella de 35 dólares con otras arriba de 70 Comment from : @francheskaalvarez7708 |
Very informative, thank you for some great choices to try😊 Comment from : @cancelchannel3394 |
Johnny walker red lable, good enough for jesse stone, good enough for me Comment from : @andrewnash5933 |
Bullshit, how can u dump JW red like this Comment from : @subhashchandra1964 |
Balvenie doublewood 😍 Comment from : @chindianajones3742 |
Very informative video Comment from : @ArvosK9 |
Highland park is "salty" mainly because it comes from the Orkney Islands of the north coast of Scotland, "Monkey Shoulder" is an ailment that distillers get by turning the malts with a shovel, :D still tastes great Comment from : @billyd7053 |
Highland Park 12 is one of my top 5 Scotches of all time and Monkey Shoulder is one of my WORST 5 Scotches of all time Not saying you are wrong, but in my experience, Scotch is very VERY subjective based on the individual's personal tastes Comment from : @farklestaxbaum4945 |
so you want us to water down Glenfiddich 12 so that we can have a better experience with it later with all of its flavorsbrYeah, good idea Next time I have friends over and I get out the chateau petrus 18 I'll plop a couple ice cubes in their glasses for that wine spritzer feel! Comment from : @bad74maverick1 |
Monkey Shoulder smells and tastes like cat puke; I'd rather just drink cutty sark rot gut Comment from : @michaeltrent2726 |
my heart beat skipped when the red label was droppeddamn man! Comment from : @jasdeepsinghfaridkot1588 |
All good options… I’ve drunk Scotch since 2010, 13 years and never tried Monkey Shoulder until last Christmas, I thought it was marketing hype and average corporate scotch, I was surprised and wrong, very fruity and good, similar to compass box, but not quite as good, 90 though, cheers🎉 Comment from : @TheNewMediaoftheDawn |
I drink JW black on vacation But monkey shoulder being a blended single malt whisky is a hitter And sherry and port is always the way to go with scotch!! Enjoy!! Comment from : @umami0247 |
JW costs half the price of Monkey Shoulder Comment from : @ZAPNEP |
Great into to the different blends! I have tried all but two! Comment from : @kevinw9073 |
Спасибо 🤝 Comment from : @rassvetand5695 |
I found some Glenmorangie 10 on clearance Definitely a nice change of pace, but not a big enough difference to justify the cost over MS Comment from : @IlNeige |
i thought Dewars have always doubled aged Comment from : @jerdeldelsol2316 |
Glenfarclas 12 is also a great starting point Comment from : @joeandersen9038 |
I learned a lot! THANK YOU! Comment from : @grandrapids57 |
I started with Glenfiddich 12 Still remember that bottle lol Comment from : @mattsayle |
"Better than Monkey shoulder!", or different from 😎brYou did a good job with a variety of facets of whisky, and I think beginners should try them allbrYour only fault is that you mentioned Monkey Shoulder without describing it (Sipping a wee right now) Comment from : @chimay3 |
Glenmorangie 10 versus Glenmorangie 12 Which is better? Comment from : @jcurbin305 |
Classic Laddie is the best whisky on the list, but may be a bit much for most just starting to drink Scotch whisky Comment from : @DileepB |
Hate Black Label I haven't tried Monkey Shoulder but being a blended malt (no grain) I would be surprised if it wasn't miles better than the Johnny Black Comment from : @canal-do-guga-namura |
Excellent content for rookies like me I’m starting out with Dewar’s White Label, which I really like Comment from : @rawlsian3352 |
Now I have to try GlenGrant 12 lolbrFamous Grouse Naked Malt (Naked Grouse) is also a super approachable intro Scotch Comment from : @SSR_Virgo_Tiger |
I don't know about other countries but in South African Monkey Shoulder is cheaper and a quality blended whiskey, Glen Grant Majors Reserve is the cheapest single malt whiskey Comment from : @Donono84 |
Overall good video with some nice recommendations but a lot of these are not starter Scotches Monkey Shoulder goes for $36 and The Balvenie goes for $75 here in Michigan Over 2X is not an alternative starter Scotch The Johnny Walker Black is a good recommendation at $37 Anyway I'd say these are good transition Scotches for someone looking to take a step beyond Monkey Shoulder But even at transition The Balvenie is in the next price bracket Comment from : @JC-77 |
All great picks for newbs Agree 100 Comment from : @CatfishCounts |
Love Johnie walker blaack and monkey shoulder Comment from : @joeyjuandiaz6195 |
Monkey shoulder is extremely impressive for both veterans and beginners Comment from : @wewereneversane9833 |
The only Scotch that I’ve ever had was the Glenfidich 12 and I really enjoyed it Gonna try a couple more of these! Comment from : @TravisG88 |
Good choices I have a few of those but I buy Monkey Shoulder for my everyday dram now It's a great value Comment from : @lrvogt1257 |
I tend to like a scotch and coke; I like the tasting notes but don't want the heat and water tends to gross me outbrbrAmended: glenfiddich 12 was good, glenfiddich 15 was perfect for me, glenfiddich 18a little strong and not my preferred, also expensivebrmonkey shoulder: my first one tried, it wasn't bad but I disdain smoky scotch which I picked up in the blendbrbrsimply put: I love scotches finished with sherry casks, arguably bourbon casks, definitely NOT rum (glenlivet rum cask finishdefinitely not a winner for me!) Comment from : @thevashfan12392 |
HP12 is a very good bottle for its price I can feel the difference in quality compared to other 12's Also macallan 12 is a good one to start with Comment from : @khoanguyen-fc4jw |
glen grant 10 and 12 are quite good for the price Comment from : @weesky5222 |
Also those gift packs are a nice way to try some Scotch without buying a 750ml bottle My 1st experience with Glenmorangie & Balvenie were with those gift packs and I had a small sample bottle of Glenfiddich 12 as I started trying Scotch as I was only into Bourbon at the time Comment from : @darrylgaston7009 |
I like those choices, highland is still like $60 plus per bottle in the US not good for beginners for that price That being said I like highland Comment from : @jamesstrader3296 |
Monkey Shoulder definitely has a funk to it that I personally am not a fan of and I'm also not the biggest fan of peated Scotch, so it's great to get suggestions on other options in the world of Scotch Very intrigued to learn about the Bruichladdich Classic Laddie! Will have to keep an eye out for that one to try Comment from : @irishsausage6 |
It would be great to have something like this for Bourbon and Irish Whiskey Comment from : @tiswasthe1 |
Hey, I don‘t know if you can get your hands on it in the US but talking about salt with the highlandpark i can really recommend „Guglhof TauernRogg“ from Salzburg, Austria to you I‘m from Germany and found this single malt by coincidence and am now ordering it ever since :DbrLove your work, wish you all the best! Comment from : @rogerklotz4688 |
“Get them all” best advice ever Comment from : @domsansom8508 |
Another great starter and usually vey cheap… GlenGrant 10 Comment from : @domsansom8508 |
Balvenie 12 was my gateway whiskey Comment from : @anthonym8345 |
but monkey shoulder is the cheapest Comment from : @stevet5790 |
Hi, just picked up on your channel through this vlog and have subscribedbrI think you have missed one real option as a "starter" whisky, Black Bottle As a blend of malts it offers a decent flavour profile and whilst it has peated Islay malt as one of the constituent parts, it's not overly smoky brBlack Bottle was the "hoose dram" of choice for my Father in Law and as such was my introduction to a decent dram My own father was more of a Cameron Brig kinda lad, if any whisky made it as far as the hoose :) nuff said brAs pointed out by some commenters below as well, price is a factor Whilst here in Scotland, Black Bottle will be consistently under £20 per bottle, most of the others you have listed won't be (apart from Monkey Shoulder) brMalts such as those you quoted fluctuate in price from the big four supermarkets by between £10 and £15 a bottle from week to week brGive it a try folks, as a go to whisky, it's not half bad!brbrKind Regards from Fife, Scotland brRodger Comment from : @rodgercaldwell7804 |
I work part time in a liquor store I steer the customers to Speyburn 10 or walker green Dependent on their price point Cheers Comment from : @Palmetto_Traveler |
What about Aldi Highland Black? Have you tried any of the Penderyn whisky’s? Comment from : @johnday8677 |
Glad to see Old Pulteney in the back ground! Comment from : @janetmackinnon3411 |
Besides Monkey Shoulder I would also recommend Jameson Stout Edition Comment from : @utube321piotr |
Wee Beastie, I would have never got into whiskey without serious peat Comment from : @rbking2 |
Price doesn't really come into the equation, if you don't like a particular style, you are not going to drink it however cheap it is Johnny Walker black was probably my first experience of whiskey and not one I would go back to, almost put me off for good brMy goto now is Glenmorangie 10, but I have also enjoyed the Balvenie double barrel and the Glenfiddich 12 I'm not a fan of the smokey and peaty whiskeys And although Irish rather than Scottish the Bushmills 10 is also a nice smooth whisky Comment from : @iallso1 |
Some might be better but all cost more, some double the price of the Monkey
brMonkey Shoulder gets the most bang for the buck Comment from : @richardgillette5759 |
The only one not in my cabinet is the GlenGrant Comment from : @noliyoshida7486 |
I'd submit Naked Malt (formerly Naked Grouse) as a contender Comment from : @JohnTurner61 |
We alcoholics are sure creative with our excuses to drink Join that with Capitalism and we can go broke drinking I didn't even mention the liver transplant 🥃🥃🥃🥃 CHEERS! Comment from : @markgigiel2722 |
I think a heavily peated cask-strength would be a good beginner's choice Comment from : @theodosios2615 |
Getting into? What is whisky ? Well it's alcohol, get into rum , wine , beer ? I don't know if scotch is something sophisticated as such, cheese and wine, whisky and haggis Comment from : @ojsimps701 |
I agree with your list (mostly) also a Bruichladich fan boi , i would suggest Glenfarclas 12 for a sherried whisky , also 100 on the JW black label its great neat or on the rocks Comment from : @kevinm919 |
Me personally, I like Glenfiddich 18 Tried the 12 but I like 18 better Comment from : @Green-Andy |
as soon as he mentioned an ice cube with the black label i have stopped listening ice kills flavour try water Comment from : @richardogde2222 |
Jamieson is my personal favorite Comment from : @donaldhenhawke5187 |
