Safety for me is important because I want to go to work again tomorrow and don’t have time to get hurt So take precautions and think about what we are doing But as electricians there are things that are intrinsically hazardous like trouble shooting, we take precautions but it is still hazardous

I like the philosophical principal of this, however, if safety is a personal responsibility, why not just say, "safety first - it's on you" "Safety 3rd" is a very poetic notion that contradicts what it's trying to say

This is a "dirty truth" to Mike Rowe because he is ignorant and sarcastic The reality is that safety is the responsibility of line supervision / management All the time every day This is why supervisors and managers who allow employees to be seriously hurt or killed can be put in prison So the boat Captain can say one thing, but at the end of the day, he could lose his business, get fined, and go to jail There's no room to debate this It's the simple truth I am a CSP / CIH with a long work history in construction, industry, and yes even maritime

The reason "safety first" is a thing is so practices are put in place not to save just the individual but also any bystanders (or product) the "safety third" worker may unintentionally damage, or worse If your employer practices "safety third", get the hell out
