I can tell that Peter is still young and energetic, just look at his hasty responses For major corporations, to monopolize is much better than to work hard Privately owned companies can be as bureaucratic and corrupt as governments It was too late for Milton to amend his ideas so he had to adhere to it Comment from : @theodorlee |
|
Wait Government is bad, everything is privatized, yet we save the payment of taxes Why? Comment from : @yesmayhem |

Very naive arguments First, regarding FDA, the idea is to prevent harm, not sue after the fact Many libertarians really believe money solves everything "just sue and make them pay" sure, but my leg is already gone Secondly, regarding the example of airline safety, there is "ample evidence", as mr Friedman puts it, that airlines cut corners and skip processes All his philosophy is based on after-the-fact action That is no comfort for anyone No amount of money will restore a dead person or a ruined life While I agree that government s far too large, there is a key role for it to play as an impartial arbiter, who does not stand to gain or lose from transactions prevention is a mighty powerful tool to keep society functional Reaction is a sure road to chaos and endless litigation with dubious outcomes As for the difference between libertarian and liberal, Libertarianism is predicated on the assumption of a certain amount of wealth by individuals, such that they don't need social services, which is a total disconnect from reality an are completely self-centered and reaction oriented Liberals are socially conscious and focused on prevention, broad improvement of conditions, trying not to leave anyone behind Whether Liberals are successful or not is an issue of execution, not philosophy Comment from : @franciscotoro9454 |

Adam Smith's Wealth of Nations is in the public domain and can be downloaded from Project Gutenberg and searched The printed book can cost you $15 and take a lot of effort to search Has Smith's "Invisible Hand" been used as a propaganda tool for decades since most people would never read WoN?brbrSmith used the word 'invisible' six times but only once as "invisible hand" It is really curious that we hear about the 'invisible hand' so muchbrbrSmith used the word 'education' EIGHTY TIMES We are not told about that Search for "and account" and you will find multiple instances of "read, write, and account", not "read, write and arithmetic" Double entry accounting was more than 300 years old when Smith wrote Wealth of Nations, but 50 of Brits were illiterate and public schools did not exist in 1776brbrThe United States could have made accounting/finance mandatory in the schools since Sputnik Wouldn't that have helped everyone best serve their own self interest? But we do not hear the people who propagandize us about the "invisible hand" advocating mandatory accounting because that might make their invisible rip-offs more difficultbrbrAdam Smith never used the word 'depreciation' in WoN He mentioned paper money being depreciated one time Marx wrote about 'depreciation' 35 times in Das Kapital, sometimes regarding the depreciation of machines and sometimes of money Marx even mentioned Adam Smith 130 times though not much about education brbrConsumers did not buy automobiles, air conditioners, televisions and microwave ovens before 1885 brMarx died in 1883brbrBut it's OK! Our brilliant economists do not talk about the depreciation of under engineered consumer trash today either Every time you buy a replacement the purchase is added to GDP What about NDP? Oh sorry, when do you ever hear an economist explain NDP? That's OK too, they only depreciate the Capital Goods and ignore the depreciation of consumer junk anywaybrbrWealth of Nations has probably been in the public domain for a very long time but cheap computing did not make it available in Project Gutenberg until 3/17/2001 Milton Friedman died in 2006 Was Friedman giving us the straight dope on economics or treating us like a bunch of dopes for decades? Comment from : @psikeyhackr6914 |

Everyone should read "The Road to Serfdom" It's a PITA the way it it's written with ponderous run on sentences etc But at it's core, Hayek lays out what the government should do, the amount of intervention it should do and the perils of an ever expanding bureaucracy as well of the failings of socialism I agree with most of his points The government should do just enough to protect the people from nefarious actors in society and overseas and only intervene in people's lives in times of extreme strife When it becomes too big, too involved, it becomes the nefarious actor Comment from : @johnbaker6125 |
|

Great interview I noticed Milton didn't need narrated editorial sidebars to get his point across I didn't expect him to advocate for the institution of carbon credits That blew me away Peter did a good job in this interview, too Didn't step on Milton, allowed him all the time he needed to explain his position and was very receptive Discourse like this is the missing piece in modern politics Comment from : @jblox1990 |

Bike helmets don't safe lives Well not necessarily, on balance Primary cause of death in motor cycle crashes, without helmets, is head trama That leaves one heart, two kidneys, one liver, possible lungs lobes, that can save at least four other sick people by transplantation!
