What he says definitely applies to relatively new PAs, but with experience the line can get blurry I’m a physician who works with PAs in the critical care space, and depending on the physician, a PA job can be like an ongoing fellowship in a specialty if the physicians are willing to make the effort to expand the knowledge and skills of their PAs An experienced PA who over the years has gradually assumed more responsibility and autonomy as the knowledge and skill base has grown ( very much like a progressing resident or fellow) can become sort of a junior physician, depending of course on the nature of the supervising physicians and their trust and comfort level with PAs

Physican assistant is a misleading title It is like a fast-track physician or a faster track physician PA's are doctors and mostly who provide the healthcare I get I rarely see an MD these days

From the video, it seems PA is similar to the CHO (community health officer) and Health assistants in Nigeria They often attend school of health technologies which offer courses like CHEW, Health information management, health technician, environmental health, health assistant and health education and promotion and some other coursesbrbrHere, the CHO and their accepted varieties work only in primary care (if they choose to work in government) and only get to do more specialties in private practice while the Health assistants work in the Secondary or Tertiary Facilities (in government), can also work in Private practice and get to do more speciality There is a limit to the vacancies in government therefore most work in private practicesbrbrThe pay (as I'm told) is more fitting in government than PrivatebrbrI'm not the most reliable source (as i still get confused by the CHEW, CHO,JCHEW,CHT and CHS differences and job descriptions AND since I've only seen 1 Health assistant and it was in the tertiaty government hospital) but this is my basic understanding

Love a medical profile that covers the topic of PAs with respect The only downside I saw with becoming a PA when I was applying was how negative a lot of the physicians viewed PAs and I was so scared that I would be doomed to being some doctor’s b*tch while getting no credit or respect I wish doctors understood that people who chose PA did it because that role fit their career and lifestyle goals and to still make a huge difference, not to undermine the importance of physicians Most of us WANT someone above us I promise we are not trying to take your spot or pretend to be doctors

One important thing to also consider is the learning environment If you put medicine into a book during PA school you learn like 70-80 while medial school you learn the whole thing, of course medicine is still expanding but generally that’s the case PA school is like a race you it starts right off with high intensity a bunch of quizzes every week and a LOT of information crammed in just 2 years but it’s much shorter Medical school it’s still a bunch of information crammed but medical school is more like a marathon gotta keep a steady rythme but it’s much longer and even after medical school you still got residency Of course each school has aspects of the other but down to the core pa school was all about getting people competent in medicine quickly and getting them in the workforce and medical school is about getting people very knowledgeable and good at whatever speciality they go in I think how you learn and what environment you want really is important cuz you don’t wanna burn out while still being in school

'lifelong resident' is such a wrong description You get better pay, do different things, have COMPLETELY differing roles than most residents have, have much higher respect than residents, and obviously the hours You mention 2 of those things but you kind of gloss over them The hours are WAY better than a resident (we are talking half as much per week-40 instead of 60 to 80) and the pay is also WAY better (again we are talking double the pay of most residents) Many PAs (including myself) chose this route directly because we did not want to spend so much time and acquire so much debt in medical school Sure you make less than a doctor, but think about how many more hours, responsibility, call, etc a doctor has to endure when thats all considered, the PA route makes sense for alot of people and I have had many residents tell me they wish they took the PA route but it was too late for them to change because they already had accumulated so much debt from school
