Neither one is a great career choice for young engineers anymore brbrTo my younger fellow Construction Engineers: Construction career is a BAD choice Here are some pieces of advice from a high profile senior construction engineer/manager with master projects on international basis: Construction engineering WAS a great career in 20th centurybrbrBut there are much BETTER career paths these days Reasons: brbr1-Scalability Example: Some Fintech or high-tech computer engineer/entrepreneur with an online product reaching instantly to billions of people as potential customers beats the hell out of the largest construction companies on ENR list, when it comes to profitability and specifically effort/income ratio Even a Youtuber doing travel vlogging can earn more money and much more recognition than the guy who designed or constructed the tallest building or largest dam in the world br2- AI: Specifications, Design and Scheduling are already being taken over by AIbr3- Risky and stressful Enough saidbr4- Competition is for losers: Most construction projects are bid among several companies Experience says you win one out of 10 bids; and you are guaranteed to lose money on the one that you won; because you probably missed somethingbr5-Design & Construction subs: Most construction projects include a design firm and a construction firm The construction contractor is responsible to build what the design firm designs… and many designs are inherently costly because designers don’t always understand how to keep costs down in their designs Unfortunately, for the construction contractor, they don’t usually find this out until after they have bid the jobbr6- Chicken & Egg: Even if you are a super aggressive construction startup, no VC will finance you They are looking for industry disrupters You cannot get large federal or state/city or any projects before you have impressive portfolio Without getting projects you cannot develop portfolio That pigeon hole keeps you running around on construction site as an employee for some corporate till you retirebrbrCONCLUSION: Unless you have a very special reason such as family construction business, or pathetically obsessed with construction industry, or etc switch your career vision to some more scalable business such as hedge funds or high-tech engineering Learn finance, start a hedge fund, write Apps and publish them from the comfort of your desk rather than going to field and deal with some unpleasant folks and incidents for mehhh moneybrbrConstruction career was good in 20th century World has changed Move on Do more high-tech stuff

Hi Kienen, I have a question As a civil engineering student, I always thought English classes were so useless and I just focused on math and science classes Now that I'm interning as a project engineer, I see how important English really is Whether it’s to communicate through email or writing RFI’s I've seen the wrong choice of words can harm one’s company and cost the company a lot of money Do you guys have any book recommendations or how to get better at this Or any tips?
