I'm having trouble understanding the chart Is this annual immigration, total immigration since the beginning of the count or net migration? It's a fascinating chart that highlights some major trends in immigration to the United States But what are the axes of the original graph (the one we see in the background, lower right) Beautiful and dynamic presentation but it sure could use a key (PS a few other curious points: Why does the chart start in 1820 - was there no immigration prior to that, or no data available? The immigration from Mexico does not show a spike in the 1840's, when the United States conquered and annexed 50 of Mexico's territory And what's up with "immigration from Puerto Rico"? Those are American citizens why are they shown here as immigrants? And Russia - does that mean the Russian Empire, the USSR or the current Russian Federation? What about countries like Austro-Hungary is that the "Austria" in the list? How does Germany count as a country of origin before the 1870s, when Germany was united? Ditto for Italy - became a united nation circa 1870 And Canadians were British citizens prior to 1867 So many questions!)

have my doubts on this databrThere was no Puerto Rico as a country, until a few years after 1898 In fact up to 1911 they were considered as Spanish as any person borned in Madrid So listing them here prior to 1911 is as listing an Spanish location
