Speaking and reading is always the way to go, writting is acquired thoughout your life in china and how hard you want to learn them, there are some alphabets like korean that is very easy for even for people who know one language

Use Fun with Chinese for learning Hanzi There are fun stories with Pictographs for every word much easier to learn that way I know that because I learned Hanzi 8 years ago and stopped and now I'm relearning and I remember every character I learned using the book

I grew up in Taiwan, so I also went through the same gruesome process of having to write characters out over and over I hated doing it as a kid But now that I am older, I have came to appreciate that aspect of learning the Chinese language There is a meditative quality to writing the characters out by hand that became very obvious to me when I took up the habit of hand copying the Buddhist Heart Sutra Ancient Confucian scholars of China practice calligraphy not just to learn to write characters They do it because calligraphy had became a form of heart calming meditation If the goal is to simply learn the Chinese language for the purpose of communication, I totally agree with what she is saying But I would highly encourage people to take up the habit of writing the Chinese characters out and develop competence in writing it beautifully There's a deeper aspect of Chinese culture that would reveal itself to you
