I'm starting to invest, and I was studiying banks While I'm not a expert, I know enough about banks to know how to indentify a bad one In the end I had 5 left: br brA - Colossal cash cow that has a really strong brand and incredible numbers It has a massive discount because the governement owns 501 of it I'm a client BTW (not a happy one tho) brB - A's bigger competitor It's considered a high quality company It's brand isn't as strong as A's, bad it's nothing to laught at brC - Another massive bank that compete with A and B From what I've researched it seems to be a bad bank to both work in and an account into It has been declining since the pandemic brD - It's also a large cap, but it's focus is investiments It has been experiencing a massive and sustentable growth, and is priced accordingly brE - Mid cap focused on companies with really solid numbers and growth potential br brFor my first investment I decided to go 100 in D because it seems like the better opportunity (despite it's high price) That don't mean I can't invest in E or one of the big 3 in the future But if I decide to go with B, for example, I should definitivelly not invest in A and C They're competitors so one's growth means the demine of another one Also since their strategies are basically the same, they're heavily correlated, wich means my portifolio will be diversifiyed in name only

For people looking into index fund, you can go further and go with ETF which are basically funds of funds allowing you to diversify into many market at once including international / emerging markets They have the bonus of being self rebalancing and usually deal with currency exchange rate themselves when they include foreign assets
