Good reputableDealerships sell 200 cars a month, you buy a car every 5 years They’re going to be better BUT lose the attitude that they’re scamming you OR that they’re shady A reputable dealership wants you to come back next time you need a car, they want you to refer them to others

Overwhelmingly this is solid advice I’ve been in the car business for 28 years Taxes are mandatory, doc fees are mandatory, however concessions can and sometimes are made within the sales price of the vehicle to assist with that Also, depending on what you’re buying an extended warranty may not be a bad idea Cars as a whole aren’t built extremely great these days and failures of systems are more common place

I bought a new car for the first time ever in my life Got a great out the door deal that made me feel good But when I had to go “talk” to the finance person he fought so hard to get me to sign up for a warranty When I asked what the overall price of warranty was, he said $4k, but it’s just a few dollars extra a month I had to say NO, very clearly, at least 5-7 times They challenged it hard I wasn’t prepared for that but still stuck to my plan

A few things I've done that has helped me get some really reliable cars is 1) go to Carmax and sit in the cars to see how they feel The sales folks don't get commission so there isnt pressure from them 2) test drive cars from enterprise See how the vehicle works in everyday life events for the day since the dealer only lets you drive a couple miles 3) purge and sell a lot on marketplace for quick cash I use that money to help with the registration and tax costs

The way they introduce those warranties is so sleazy You’ve already agreed on the out the door price and they want to spring it on you and bully you into it by focusing on monthly payment instead of actual cost When we bought our van they tried to sell us a warranty for the electronics by saying it would avoid a $4000 repair The warranty cost almost $3000 lol I had trouble explaining why I was saying no because I was so shocked that he was actually trying to sell it with a straight face

Buy private party instead You can still hire a mechanic to do an inspection, test drive it, and your local tag office will handle the paperwork Just be sure you check on what the private party price should be, so you don't overpay You are going to overpay at the dealership If it's your only option, I'd comparison shop by getting quotes on a low mileage CPO with lots of good consumer reviews
