I am an Australian who backpacked through Europe and remember the first time I saw Scottish currency while working in a London pub I wasn't sure it was real and didn't know the intricacies of it's use I was obligated to accept it (according to co workers) but could not use it as change or circulate it except to a bank That was not a good day

Am Irish, so when I go to to the North or Scotland, I end up with a bunch of North or Scottish notes, which can be pretty annoying as they are practically useless when you go to England, as everyone rejects them

Imagine a bank note that is legal tender, but 100 worthless the moment that it's printed If you imagined the 0 euroes note- you would be correct! The 0 Euroes note was printed in the early 2000s across much of Europe as a kind of tourist souvenir One nation could have as many as 4 different designs for this piece of paper- the one I have in my flat is purple and features the Eiffel Tower on it

The issue with accepting Scottish notes in England is it's usually low paid, untrained service workers who's heads are on the line If someone hands you a bank note and you don't recognise it you're not gonna accept it because it's not worth the risk (your job)

I once was given a scottish 10 pound note and Yes I genuinely had never seen one before and questioned if I could even spend it or if it would be accepted as legal currency and I got rid of it as fast as I could by using it at the corner shop I disagree with the suggestion that they should just use bank of england notes, they made their own stylized currency which has features from their history and culture, we should respect that, we're not here to take away their identify but we definitely need more awareness that their currency exists and is fully usable and should be accepted throughout the UK

Lots of English shops refuse to accept English £50 notes, and many local businesses often refuse to accept £20 notes because of how often they're forged, and because since most people almost never use them, most people working in shops don't have enough experience handling them to quickly recognise the feel of a fake as they often can with forged £5s and £10s

What a lot of people dont know the term legal tender does not mean a shop has to take your money they can refuse any money they want they can even refuse to accept anything but notes only and no coins as legal tender is a strange law as even when paying off a debt and all you had was Scottish notes you will still have options to change it in any bank or post office so anyone can still refuse and make you pay the debt so legal tender is a very strange term and kind of means nothing as any shop can refuse them and not breaking any law same with refuse a sale to anyone they like but banks can not refuse the notes they have to take it if they like it or not unless fake ones even old £1 notes from ages ago you can still take it to a bank and get a £1 coin or in your bank as even old notes no longer in service is legal tender to a bank as old notes or coins still hold a value that is printed on them no matter how old it is
