Well, the animations looked childish when Money video appeared You seem to be missing the point Comment from : @plp91 |
The "primitive" look of the animation it's exactly what makes it last It's denying the overdone heavy look of nowadays 3D animation brIt was raw magic produced with Quantel Paintbox on a Bosch FGS-4000 CGI It's what's still so attractive on a Pac-Man" or "Super Mario" game It's raw entertainment It's truly a KISS wonder Simplicity tends to lasts forever :) Comment from : @paulobastos1774 |
Whole verse removed from history? Because of the word faggot? Comment from : @CBEnoddyy |
What was sting doing on Montserrat? Pervert! Comment from : @williamhaddoc |

I hear bar bands cover this once in a while and it's hilarious Nobody will say it 🎶 That little with the earring and the makeup🎶 Comment from : @RandysRides |
Its all about the guitar tone and riff Talk about the banjo like riff and mic placements but not the tone Its all in the cocked wah pedal Comment from : @YeahGoodthanksYourself |
I remember being an 8 year old kid and seeing the music video At the time I thought it was breath takingyea hasent aged to well lol Comment from : @HubertCumbadale02 |
imagine doing a whole video about this song and not mentioning the guy in the earing and the makeup Radio versions of this song have zero verses and its just chorus chorus chorus chorus end Comment from : @eviltown103 |
George Martin’s AIR Studio in Salem, Monserrat was also used to record the Police’s Ghost in the Machine and again later Synchronicity- before Brothers in Arms So Sting already had a connection to both the studio and the island As was stated, that he was there at the time and available to pitch in was a happy accident! It was hurricane Hugo in ‘89 that devastated the island and closed the studio It lies derelict to this day Comment from : @chriskelvin248 |
I always thought "we got to move these microwave ovens, custom kitchen" was a comment on whoring out music to sell stuff Comment from : @bobleglob162 |
The guy was such a "bonehead" he basically wrote the lyrics for Money for Nothing for Mark Comment from : @mackeydirk8643 |
cheeky coverage but nice history smiled the whole time its a good day Comment from : @gwenna1161 |
I’m listening to this thinking what the hell does Sting have to do with all this? Completely memory holed his involvement 😮 Comment from : @PatricksBreastplate |
Naturally, Im a bit older But the graphics on that music video really reflect those times and actually make it memorable This was a nice video, thank you Comment from : @TyfoiD75 |
Today, I found out Mark is English, he looks 100 New York!!! Comment from : @sctrader151 |
Funfact: sting wasnt the only musician that comes to the Studio AS far as i know, that Mark wasnt happy with the Drums and sting bring's his Drummer from his last Album to the Studio Omar " the Machine" Hakim 😅 Comment from : @andreaslatsch8024 |
Again, a British narrator stealing our videos to line his own pockets, ferry Comment from : |
A similar mic “mishap” also gave Norman Greenbaum’s Spirit in the Sky its unique guitar sound that Greenbaum says that he never could quite replicate again Comment from : @justinschraeder8924 |
It's clear to me that a cocked wah pedal is what gives the tone Comment from : @perrysaker1526 |
I was 14 in 1986 and brothers in arms was one of my first three CDs I ever bought Everyone seemed to either have it or want it - that and Tina Turners Private Dancer I;m embarrassed to say the other two were Go West Go West and Lionel Richie Dancing on the Ceiling Both good albums - but not Brothers in Arms or Private Dancer which are still go to albums for me today Comment from : @henghistbluetooth7882 |
Excellent video!!!!! Comment from : @trumpetman70 |
Iirc this was the first Music video on MTV europe! Comment from : @nirfz |
You cant play dire straits without the knopfler's blister I got it on my thomb and now i chicken pick like a decent guitar player😂 Comment from : @valblacksmiths886 |
The animation for the video had images that became as iconic as the song Between the animation and the impact on the CD market this song pushed the world of music forward to places no-one expected it could reach It was a moment of evolution Comment from : @trevorberridge6079 |
Not a hardware store but actually a Montgomery Wards store Comment from : @Warpfield |
It might be because I\m from Brazil, and in the old days, information was spread in a very different way But I was almost 30yo when I realized that was Sting's voice (and of course, I asked myself how I didnt find it way sooner) Comment from : @icooliveira |
Mark felt sympathy by calling them bone heads? Comment from : @JAKPM |
I saw Eric Clapton in the early nineties with Mark as the second guitarist Disappointed that this was the one Dire Straits song they did-even more disappointed that they didn't do the intro riff Comment from : @drewbobmorgan248 |
So the workers were boneheads, eh? But he makes his money off of them Thanks, Mark, for the insight in your attitude Comment from : @johnceena7322 |
Recording and quoting " HIS " songplease explain?? Comment from : @onkelmarvin8360 |
the video graphics designer invented minecraft !!! he should be owed zillions 😮 Comment from : @pitchforkcustom |
Great video thanks for making Comment from : @christaylor5924 |
Just how stupid do you think people are? Knopfler is in New York city in an appliance store? Was he buying kitchenware for his hotel or something? The story tries to mask the distain he has for people who have to work for a living as well as "acts" instead of "musicians" Well it certainly put a roller in his driveway Comment from : @TubeOnRichard |
Wow, I never noticed Sting's part was based on Don't Stand So Close to Me Comment from : @PeterDaley72 |
Wonder if the two guys got any song writing royalties??? Probably not Comment from : @vacaphobia |
So I recently heard Money For Nothing on the radio, and of course they rightfully cut out the whole "that little f-- is a millionaire" line, but the part I found unnecessarily clipped was the word "chimpanzee" I had never thought that line was racist in any way, and this may be an unpopular opinion, but by bleeping out the word chimpanzee, doesn't that make it seem MORE so? What do you think? Comment from : @oliverklosov5153 |
Always hated this song Commercial crap - and Mark hated this era of their music too - well he did back in the late 80s apparently Comment from : @outofoblivionproductions4015 |
Oh, you mean this Dire Straits piece of rubbish If I had realized, I wouldn’t have bothered to click Comment from : @DummyAccount-f1q |
He was not kidding on how ground breaking this video was Next to A-HAS "Take on me" It was a F"in Deal Comment from : @retlaw190 |
This sort of content is insidious All I am interested in is Mark Knopfler telling his story This fellow David Hartley blathering on with his explanation detracts from all of it YOU are rubbish Comment from : @nickelundertone |
Mark is a story teller ( lectured at university ) Comment from : @georgesheffield1580 |
You’re a clown Comment from : @shawnallen2112 |
Just forgot about the wah pedal, eh? Stop making videos Comment from : @shawnallen2112 |
Chance, luck, genius, and craftsmanship of the right people at the right time This song is a textbook example of hitting a lottery Comment from : @AntiDot70 |
When this song came out, I was working with microwave systems, and the guys at work would sing it installing microwave systems instead of microwave ovens Comment from : @clasicradiolover |
When I first heard this song I swore that MTV would never play it Comment from : @clasicradiolover |
So I guess the guy wasn't such a bone head Comment from : @clasicradiolover |
The computer animation is pretty basic, but it's still way better than Minecraft nearly 40 years later! Comment from : @Soupdragon1964 |
It really isnt weirder than I thought and I'm really sick of YouTubers telling me things are thiser or thater than I thought Get a job Comment from : @rudderheadpamericano4826 |
I was just telling a friend the backstory of the lyrics two days agobut I'm embarrassed to admit, I never knew Sting sang on it However, just "listening" to it in my head, I can now hear his voice Comment from : @leonardodalongisland |
You have ruined my life I always win points in pub quizzes by knowing that the/my first CD was 1987 Dire Straits but I always thought that Sting was singing from the point of view of the delivery guys with "I want my own TV" Comment from : @markwallis7199 |
Dude the lyrics go "we've got to INSTALL microwave ovens" Not "we've got to SELL these microwave ovens"😢😂😂 Comment from : @johnbrooker6134 |
Kind of funny how the record version is missing a particular line that is in some of the live versions It got cancelled before getting cancelled was a thing Comment from : @michaelbarnard8529 |
Mark Knoffler (?) is an absolute genius!brNo better picker in the business! Comment from : @frankphillips7436 |
First time in history that a Karen’s rant lead to a great piece of music… Comment from : @skymaster4121 |
Had no idea Sting sung that part at the end Thank you! Comment from : @Scott45fl12345 |
Money for nothing is the only good Dire Sraits song I hate all the others, they are boring as hell And Knopfler can neither sing nor is he a "guitar genius" imho Sorry Comment from : @ernstlieber4340 |
"MTV is no longer what it once was" has to be the biggest understatement made in this video Comment from : @larrycanepa |
Magic happens… Comment from : @cajuncrackerranch7990 |
I thought he was copying Zz Top sound!!! Comment from : @soundknight |
That's a great story Comment from : @Bobalicious |
It was a half-open wah pedal that made the guitar sound the way it did That and the guitar player, of course 😉 Comment from : @BenHartley1 |
I got in trouble at school singing Money For Nothing due to the 'F' bomb, I didn't have a clue what it meant, I was just singing the song I heard on the radio Interesting to hear that it has now been removed from the radio versions Comment from : @mangoman9290 |
One more funny detail: the fictional band 'First Floor' seen in the music video at 1:50 is an existing Hungarian band, called Első Emelet (literally: 'first floor'), their record label is Magyar Records - referring to their nationality :) Comment from : @fudrajzgepk |
I believe Dark Side of the Moon was the first CD to sell 1M copies Comment from : @handymanhoney-do6881 |
don't forget the controversy wrt the lyrics as being homophobic or demeaning women Not all people understood what the song was about, which is a pity, because it was just poetry Comment from : @polarbear3427 |
The animations 100 stand the test of time Because it's the 80's Even Gen Z and Gen A understands that it's old and uncomplicated because of the technology at the time It is what it isLet's celebrate it To not do so is the same as saying the "Saturn V rocket sux because there's no live video" Comment from : @stargazer2504 |
Nice presentation, good content buddybrReal musicians performing real music - having a good bunch of fun at the same time ForK the greedy record companies, oligarchs and sure, rTump can sock it tu Comment from : @LordOfTheThreeWorlds |
The 80's was a great time to be a teenager and the music was phenomenal Comment from : @pmeehan_3 |
They weren't "selling" microwaves The lyric is "We got to install microwave ovens -- Custom Kitchen Delivery" They were workers, not salesmen Comment from : @RobertWrightOneManCovers |
Am I the only one wondering what on earth Mark Knopfler was doing in an kitchen appliance store in New York? Comment from : |
"One of the first CDs"brbrIt was one of the first bfully digital/b CDs from beginning to end, from recording through to mastering Google SPARS code Comment from : @UKCougar |
As ground breaking and innotive as Bohemium Rhapsody and I`m Not in Love ten years earlier, brilliant song and video, will still sound great in 50 years time, love Dire Straits!! Comment from : @BrianMaiden-o9c |
Who is the guy at 3:20? He sounds amazing Comment from : @smashingpumpkin1986 |
Without the live version of Don’t Stand so Close to Me by The Police, this song would never have happened Comment from : @FrankenstienArchive |
Mark’s style reminds me of Chet Atkins, who eventually did perform with Mark That event is a genuine treasure Comment from : @hbjtf |
"Money for Nothing" is the first song I ever heard on a CD It was amazing and shocking and wonderful Comment from : @aivehn |
I love everything they did Great music Comment from : @NVArt001 |
An excellent video that corrected some of the beliefs I had about that song Comment from : @1463sirmatt |
nicely reported Comment from : @TheKlokan44 |
The song is homophobic and should not be honored Comment from : @BarryStonecliffe |
Man, you couldn't trun MTV on without seeing that video for quite a while afterward Comment from : @oldb-1kenobi |
"banging on the bongos like a Chimpanzee" always makes me wince a little Comment from : @conssuckballs |
Thank you (for not being an AI video) Comment from : @paulhyland7456 |
That little remark about the 3D, This was the first real 3D Rendered animation used on TV, the three guys who did it moved from the UK to Canada after this, and started Mainframe Animation, which created a whole industry and genre all their own ReBoot, Beast Wars, and others, and all those Barbie movies done for Mattel, that's Mainframe So what looks dated now, came from the team that set the standard world wide to be chased Comment from : @PiDsPagePrototypes |
In the early 2000’s, I was at a professional baseball game and I decided to heckle a certain player Years later, he did an interview and not only admitted to hearing me, but said one of my insults became a nickname when he told his teammates what I said I’m still pretty proud of that Now, imagine how those guys in the hardware store who inspired Money For Nothing must feel… Comment from : @DiscGoStu |
The good old days when MTV was actually music videos instead of all the crap that is on there now Comment from : @scottd3669 |
The video animations are so old school that they're cool once again Comment from : @YippeeSkippie426 |
i only just now realized the Sting sing I want my MTZ is th same melody as Don't stand so close to me LOL Comment from : @robstearns7080 |
The good thing about the graphics in the video is that they are so primitive that they kind of look cool as opposed to early 3d work in movies that look outdated It´s like A-hA´s Take on Me that still looks good Comment from : @fernandosibecas3492 |
