I've always been a finger pick style thumb index middle always found it the best for me,but I wanted to go further the past year,so I had to learn to use pick and alternate pick it was frustrating am still having trouble holding the pick when playing past 135bpm alternate picking soon as I wanna get faster I feel the pick is away to fall out my fingers any tips steve?? Please help as I no my brain and body wants to push faster but my fingers are going to drop the pick if u no what I mean,I'm using jazz 111 picks I have even used abit sandpaper on them but still I feel it's no different is it muscles I dont no

Totally agree on the wrist motion…but…wrist motion combined with a bit of finger motion, which is a bit like how you would write with a pen or pencil It requires a very relaxed right hand, so you’re not consciously moving the fingers very much It’s very slight and compliments the wrist motion Steve Vai covered this in one of his instruction videos here on YT

Paul Gilbert Also use Dunlop Wedge picks that are like 05mm and those are flexible I think its easier for me to play fast with a flexible pick because I get less fatigued in my thumb which is making most of my movements when plaing fast Also that is what Paul Gilbert does to when playing fast

good info sir :) i don't know why i been stuck on medium picks forever now, i ordered 100 thick picks from amazon for 17$ and use a pair of sharp scissors to trim the tips to a point i notice it does not affect my normal strumming of chords but it does help me be more precise rally locking my right wrist down helps also as far as relaxing goes, i try, but when it comes time to do a lead i am usually all jacked up and wild !!!!!!! i notice with jerry garcia for example, he really slows his band down to give him more space to do single notes also, a really clean tone w/ a little delay n reverb always makes ur leads sound better :)

This helped so much The shaking the water off your hand analogy was perfect I also saw how you were holding the pick Looks like you keep your index finger bent at the middle knuckle only I have been bending it there and also bending it at the end knuckle, if that makes sense So my index finger is folder up, if you will This might be causing me to go slower I'm rusty and I haven't been playing due to frustration I know it takes time and I need to put effort in I stopped playing for years and am trying to get back into it THANKS!

I found after years of playing there are mainly 3 types of picking that you intertwine If your playing Slow metal lines than use your Forearm and hold the pick still with the wrist If your playing fast metal use the wrist with a little arm If your doing runs you use the wrist than if you want many notes than go into a trem pick with wrist bent up and let your wrist spasm Use all 3

For me, it's the pointy red and black Dava pics that are about a millimeter thick and the same as you as soon as the point is worn off I toss them out As soon as I started using these pointy pics it was like the door opened to my alternate picking and speed increased 100

Two major never that will damage are ulnar & radial nerve sometimes median nerve Condition name: Radial Tunnel Syndrome (elbow/thumb/index), Carpel Tunnel[thumb/index/middle] & Cubital Tunnel( pinky, ring & middle finger) SO, keep your calcium/minerals/ Vit D cheeked ie; if you see the symptoms & leave your guitar for a week or 2 Use wrist splinters as well

NEVER IGNORE a single word Coz I am someone who had lost ability to play guitar anymore Your shoulder, arms WRIST must be relaxed We never had these lessons 30 years ago Just to perfect a peace we played them for very long hours [12-16 hrs] this too is very bad Pro's say to take a 10 mins break at every 45 mins Take your mind out of it for a while In short "Patience"
