Most of these are “rare” because they are one-offs by designers created for charity auction so extremely unlikely that they will appear on eBay or similar You quote some as being “only 10,000 produced” - well that isn’t rare! There are Platinum range Barbies with a production run not exceeding 1000 And of course there are the convention dolls that may be numbered 20 or 50 (depending on the event) Also a couple of the dolls you lost are “expensive” because of the designer jewellery (gold and diamonds) rather than the doll per sebrbrAs for the #1 1959 Barbies - they are rare because in the beginning older dolls could be traded in against new ones, so the originals didn’t stay in circulation for more than a year or two

When Star Wars Prequel Episode 1 first was coming out, Mattel was offering Queen Amidala Barbies in her iconic outfits A friend was collecting them and I remember spotting a hard-to-find Red Senate Gown Barbie in the Indianapolis Airport as I was changing planes on a business trip I bought it for her and brought it home I'm pretty sure that she still has it Whatever you might think about the prequels, those were beautiful Barbies
