I was taught by the phonics method My younger sister was whole word I loved reading and have read hundreds or thousands of books in my lifetime My sister has read less than six And I’m Including books assigned for school She struggles getting through words and remembering information from page to page She was a schoolteacher high school level maths teacher She went into math cuz the other topics required too much reading

This is worth noting: the UK has had a phonics based teaching approach The result? Children can decide wotds, but choose not to read Evidence suggests reading comprehension and enjoyment has decreased The answer lies in the reading wars pendulum, and an emphasis on phonics when students should be reading to learn, not learning to read Here in NZ we have just adopted a phonics centered "structured literacy" approach, and there is genuine concern students will not need to, or have the time to, tackle challenging text on the critical and analytical level

Hooked on phonics worked for me 🕺🏿 Lol a little 90's nostalgia But seriously, the way AI is going, its sad to say but its going to be hard to convince a kid they have to read a whole book when AI can make a detailed summary thats easier to absorb and regurgitate They can even listen to audio books, even though that also probably requires a level of focus many of them wont be able to/want to achieve I think the biggest problem is that today's kids are being taught by young adults who didnt grow up reading books Many Gen Z teachers have no clue how to teach kids to read

Or in high school you avoided English class like the plague while taking every other advanced placement class because the English teacher reduced every paper by 1 letter grade for every miss spelled word Which means you stopped English classes after basic sentence and paragraph structure But despite this, you passed the Georgia Regents test for English competency first try because they did not take off for miss spelled words

I started homeschooling my daughter after first grade because they never taught her phonics It was all just memorizing sight words but no one in kindergarten or first grade taught her the sounds letters make in letter teams There were other reasons too, but phonics was a main concern We had to do a lot of hard work to undo the damage that had been done

I was raised with phonics I went to a parochial school I joined the Navy for 22 years I retired and went to college I was appalled in my English Lit classes the reading and comprehension abilities of the 18 year olds I was sitting in class At the end of a semester a professor asked if I would provide a list of books for future classes I made suggestions like Catch 24, Of mice and men, Johnny Got his gun, Slaughter House Five and others He actually said that some of these classics would be beyond their abilities

I was reading at 3 years old and at 37 I still read everyday My neices and nephews range from 13-19 and none of them have ever read an entire book over 100 pages in their life They think it's dumb and useless I told them if you can read and comprehend properly, there is nothing you cannot learn They laughed at me and said they had YouTube for that Their dad (my brother) doesn't read either and uses the excuse that it's too boring for his fast paced mind People who dont read are dumb

The last time I have read an entire book was Frankenstein and Wizard of Oz in 7th grade because I enjoyed them so much I don't like reading, but teachers usually just present us a handful of pages to read and not necessarily the entire reading material

Theres a far simpler explanation for why elite universities are dealing with this issue, but yeah dude, best to over-intellectualize the issue instead of acknowledge the uncomfortable and obvious Admin decisions that were implemented at the Elite level and spread like wildfire through the university system

I remember ARGUING with my kids principal about this very issue I ended up taking them out of school and homeschooling them Today, one has a Masters and my other is working towards her PhD so she can be a librarian My oldest doesnt read bc she said university burnt her out on reading My youngest has to read several books A WEEK and is 1000 burnt out on it even though she enjoys the books

For a long time in history, people who read were respected and considered desirable They were seen as sophisticated Today they are labelled as nerds, bookworms, etc In most schooling systems around the world it's simply not "cool" to be a reader anymore

Tell us why reading is important? Putting the old standard onto the new isn't necessarily progress Will our offspring need to read in one hundred years from today? Is reading comprehension a necessary skill that most people need? Apparently educators in the public system believe otherwise The divide deepens, keeping down the middle to low and rising the upper to elite Looking at the data, clearly there is a coordinated effort to dumb down the greater public

However, I want to argue with the first point about students at elite universities not being able to read one book within a week It is not that they are not capable of doing so, but it is because there are so many other responsibilities students have Other classes, extracurricular involvement, multiple jobs, taking care of family members, etc It just is not feasible to read a decently long book every week with so many other responsibilities, which is why I'm assuming these students messaged their professor However, I do agree that reading and writing rates are dropping at alarming rates and it is definitely important to spread awareness about!!

In my school they started to make us read mandatory book, this was horrible, they let us choose but anyways this was a step to me for hating reading, it took me 10 years to restart reading, now I'm reading 10 to 30 minuts every day, wich helps me to learn about the topics that gonna shape my professional life

When I was a teenager, I could read Crime and Punishment no problem, and I read it in my spare time for pleasure (I love Dostoevsky) But now I'm an adult working full time, I picked up The Idiot and I could only read twenty pages at a time It was a big strugglebrbrBut Crime and Punishment is imo the better written book, it wasn't engrossing to read The Idiot

I'm so grateful to my mom for instilling a love of reading in me, getting Hooked on Phonics for me in the 90's, and letting me watch her play PC games Games like Planescape: Torment, Diablo and Fallout had scrolling text with voiced dialogue that introduced me to words and concepts a 6 year old wouldn't normally have been exposed to I entered Kindergarten having already read The Hobbit My dad and uncle are functional illiterates and that could have been me

I grew up in the 70s and I learned how to read by phonics In 2nd grade there was another girl in my class and myself were allowed to read the upper elementary books at my school I was in elementary school and was told that I read on a 11th grade level I loved to read when I was a kid
