I'll definitely be getting this book I've been playing about 40 years, but there are a lot of gaps in my knowledge that have tripped me up at times and I want to get beyond that and understand what makes music tick and how to communicate, how to think about music in a more meta kind of way I remember in my teenage years when I was jamming a lot with a jazz band, but they were way more advanced than me in expressing musical concepts, and although I could always gel with what they were doing, the inability to express concepts meant were lived in different worlds and I wanted to stand on the same plane Like many guitarists I got off on the wrong foot I had to go through five teachers till I found one patient enough to teach me to read guitar music The other four thought it wasn't important, which was absurd as two of them went on to be very in-demand session players in the LA scene in the 80s I got very good at playing by ear, could do all the shreddy stuff, but there was something missing, and that thing was theory It's very, very important

Hey Steve really having a hard time with the note recognition exercise I tried recording myself like instructed Went at a slow pace and it is still too fast Really wished you had some audio samples to follow along with Kinda disappointed the table is not colorcoded with the image on the page before it Feeling overwhelmed

Am 49 yrs and have played guitar and studied theory since age 6I have brought the bookOn page 10Is a note recognition exerciseI can say for sure that the notes due to a natural half step or minor 2nd intervalB#/Cb and E#/Fb do not exist

Almost bought the book at guitar center,but I looked thru it and it was Terribly disappointing Ok first let me be clear about what I think of Mr Vai He’s a guitar god, no doubt Now back to the vaideology As I approach the book shelf to reach for the vaideology, my heart pounded with excitement I thought”here we go, the ultimate secrets to vai’s Profoundness to all the basic structures to music as seen from a guitar god” But leafing thru the first ten pages or so, my heart stopped Mr Vai shows you on this yt video the exact pages I saw in the book Slop the video on the pages and see for yourself A little Encyclopedia of music stuffs more like it,I wanted illuminations,connections,and maybe simply how to memorize the fretboard in a magical way Nope! It’s not what all thing that u need to learn that’s only important but HOW to learn and use it Book when back on the shelf Sorry Mr Vai, please try again And whom ever helped you write vaideology, should be fired

Picked this book up a few days ago Out of all the theory books I have this is quickly becoming a favorite I can’t say any of this information is new to me It is however written in a way that means more to the guitarist He also outlines some methods for internalizing these concepts in a solid way I’ve already started using his methods

FINALLY a guitar focused music theory book written in a way my 50 year old brain can more easily absorb I played guitar as a teen, even attended MI 32 years ago, but due to life circumstances I ended up taking what turned out to be a 25-ish year hiatus away from the instrument I recently started playing again, but one forgets A LOT in 25 years I happened to come across your theory book in GC and I’m glad I thumbed through it I could quickly see by the way you presented the material that this book was GOLD, so I bought it and tossed aside the other theory book I’d already purchased months earlier That book is good, but yours fits my needs perfectly Steve, your book is helping me big time Thanks again for taking the time to write it I’d highly recommend this book to any guitar player of any age

I've always been a fan of Adam Kadmon's "Guitar Grimoire" series, and it seems like your book is a lite overview of his stuff in a way I might pick this up for my student, or as a cheeky way for me to work out how to structure my lessons!

I have always been so negative in learning theory but when Steve speaks reaches your mind and inspires you just by showing a book My guitar personal taste is not totally into vai , but as musician is so respected and charismatic that is with no doubt the biggest electric guitarist nowadays , well in the last 30 years

Stevevaihimself, I am gonna buy this book even tho everything you said in this vid sounded like a foreign language, I will read it and maybe learn something but I will probably just keep stealing your licks and playing them even tho I don't know what the hell they are (to me, most licks are pentatonic with some other shit thrown in once in a while) always wanted to learn theory so maybe your book will help me At 66 i'm probably too old a dog to learn new tricks, but if it has your name on it thats good enough for me PS sure would like to see a revisit of Jack Butler
