Not sure if it's the same in Italy or not, but when I went to Germany I was told the same thing about the ATMs in the street The conversion rates were higher to basically rip you off bc ATMs that are "holes in the wall" are there for convenience and that's pretty much it But the conversion rates in banks were different, if you take out over a certain amount (I think over 200€ but I don't remember specifically how much) Only down side is you do end up carrying more cash on you around busy streets in an unknown area Completely your choice what you do, just sharing something I think could be useful 🙂

I use a multicurrency account Much cheaper and easier, switch from one currency to another, hold money in different currencies I am paid in sterling, live in the euro zone and go to Switzerland a lot, so it's ideal for me

Starling card was a lifesaver when we visited Germany Don't know about it's conversion rate, but didn't have to pay a fee on each transaction Might be just UK based though

This is not true for every currency/bank account/ card This is not a hard rule know your rates and know that bank branch ATM 's will offer different rates from those mini market/ street corner ATM's Plan people and don't get your financial advice from a non professional

Most of the ATMs around here charge a 10-12 premium when they do the conversion That's 100 - 120 bucks on a thousand dollars, and that's after they've taken fees for the transaction

I have Bank of America and they have partner Banks in several European countries other places Found this out by accident when I was in Australia and went to a random bank and it said I wasn't charged a fee because I was a BOA customer Always good to call your credit card too to see if there is foriegn transaction fee too

If you're really cheap take Traveller's Cheques in your own currency and get them exchanged for cash in the foreign country and convert that to local currency at a currency exchange place It sounds more hassle than it is in most cases but depending on how much you're spending the rate advantage can be a big money saving
