Exchange booths have always worked for me Example in Istanbul there was a 10 fee on all banks My card does not charge foreign currencies but the local bank does We don't have those debit cards which refund the charges here Comment from : @notmyname8527 |
F**k the card s**t Take US greenbacks with you, go to the teller at the bank and exchange it for NO fee In China I go to Bank of China, NOT any local bank Travelex is a total rip-off For return trip in the future bring some of the local currency back home with you so you already have it for taxi etc until you get to the bank on your next trip Comment from : |

Affiliate links spotted opinion rejected Comment from : @TJ_Gonser |
Thanks, basically good advicesbrBut rules are not the same for all countries And rules are also changing over time brTo my experience, for a few countries the best way to get local currency is to use currency exchange boots in larger cities , especially when converting USD (or EUR in Europe), often exchange rates are better than at bank counters brWorst currency exchange rate is usually at airport and land border boots In border areas, shop accept the next border country currency for cash payment - at often bad exchange rate Comment from : @jer-in-ch |
There are several cards that reimburse the fees Schwab, fidelity, navy federal,USAA all work in foreign ATMs Comment from : @Brutushungwell |
How much cash you'll need: when travelling I put most of my spending on credit card so I don't have to worry about cash But in some countries, not everybody takes credit cards Find out and if that s the case you may need to carry more cash Comment from : @markjohansen6048 |
My first trip to the philippines, I couldn't find a way to get Filipino currency before I left My bank would do it but they had to send to some central office for the currency and they couldn't promise to have it in time I was nervous about arriving in the Philippine s with no local currency, but I was able to withdraw cash from an ATM at the airport no problem For later trips, I kept some cash from the previous trip Enough for a taxi to a hotel and a meal or two Just in case I never had a problem Comment from : @markjohansen6048 |
If you don't get enough just go back and get more: well, id quibble with that Sometimes atms are out of order or don't have any cash left to dispense Getting to the ATM may be inconvenient I wouldn't take out thousands of dollars worth at one time -- what if I lose my wallet or get robbed? -- but I generally take out more than I need right now Comment from : @markjohansen6048 |

If it's a country you know you'll be visiting again, I tend to keep my extra local currency and bring it back with me so I immediately have money as soon as I get therebrbrAnother really good option is to check if a major bank is located in your destination country I got an HSBC account before I went to Singapore the last time, and I was able to pull out local currency just by going to the bank like a normal transaction Comment from : @Neuromancer2112 |

Thanks for the tips I always knew to get cash from ATM while traveling abroad But a recent month long trip to Asia resulted in a lot of ATM fees and Foreign Transaction fees from my bank After watching your video, found out that my cash management account with Fidelity actually also offers a debit card that waive FT Fees and reimburse ATM fees Just ordered the debit card before my February trip to Mexico Comment from : @kejianniu2994 |
some people worry a lot about trying to save a few bucks on conversion or avoiding fees by, say, withdrawing a lot at one time But really, the risk of carrying around a lot of cash or being stuck with surplus when you depart, usually outweighs the small amount you lose on fees or conversion On the other hand, there is an argument for carrying around a reasonable amount of cash - in some countries ATMs are not reliable and you might not be able to get cash when you need it or in the amounts required They might have a relatively small daily maximum Comment from : @JohnKanuck |

My USA bank, Chase usually has the worst exchange rates and I wouldn’t recommend them I use Wise and also received an ATM card from them and I usually get the best exchange rates for a very low fee with them and try to find a low or no fee ATM to withdraw currency I have already converted Comment from : @Dan-g8o |

For the life of me I will never understand people converting and bringing currency with them to foreign countries Just use the ATM, its 2024, not 1950 Comment from : @RedLion304 |

I'm not big on international travel so I may not be a typical traveller ; I normally travel to just the US and the UK Over the past few years I've watched as more an more people use either a debit or a credit card for even the smallest purchase I decided to do that on recent and lengthy trips to both the US and the UK I already had about $100 / 100 GBP's of currency with me when I left home When I returned home, I had about 95 of the foreign currency that I left with You simply do not need foreign currency any more for 99 of your purchases It is certainly far safer to have some with you, but not very much The only place that I absolutely needed cash was in the US on a small river ferry which I believe crossed from Vermont into New Hampshire and it was less than $10 And, if you are driving, possibly for a coin operated air machine to top up your tires Comment from : @DavidM2002 |
If you have a Fidelity Cash Management Account, its debit card has no foreign transaction fees, and Fidelity reimburses any ATM fees So, it’s virtually identical to the Schwab debit card I have both and think both are great Comment from : @anthonygardner400 |

I live in Mexico just ten miles south of the California border Trouble is that the bank ATMs almost come a cropper when it comes to getting USA dollars They are always out of USA dollars If I could get dollars I could walk out the bank's door and go into a exchange kiosk which are on every block being that I am in a tourist beach city and get 5 more than the bank offers me Comment from : @CaptainGyro |
