I say this about everything, your baseball cards, collectible star wars stuff, even your car or motorcycle is only worth what you can get for it in a reasonable amount of time for sale, sure there is someone out there who would pay top dollar but are you really going to wait 10 years to get what some expert or some website says it's worth

If the spot prices were set properly you could take 50 silver eagles ($50 face value) and buy 1 gold eagle ($50 face value) but you can't and because it is US minted currency you should be able to do that but either gold is way overvalued or silver is way under valued

The truth is that its hard to make money buying silver The premiums are set so high it would take $40 spot to make a few dollars per ounce Maybe in 30 years you can make some but gold really is the only metal that has any significant gains Silver is still way under its all time high and gold has just hit a new all time high Silver sucks Im going to sell all of mine as soon as I can without a loss

On eBay you can get 100-200 over spot, but eBay will charge you 14 fees which is about spot after fees, and shipping

Price of one, 1 ounce gold eagle at a large, online bullion dealer is presently $250 over spot (I just checked) and 1 out of 6 shops will only pay $30 over spot Morale of the story: gold eagles are ridiculously over-priced on the retail market, and you shouldn't expect to recoup the premium you will pay for them Bottom line: buy another, lower-premium bullion coin

What about Mexican 50 peso gold (12 oz troy?) Not sure of the alloy, probably coin gold) Do they have to be assayed? Ones I have come across dated 1947, but later re-struck from the same dies Later strikes distinguished by a die break on obverse (I think, it's been a while)

Small shops need to make a profit to stay in business Try to sell a stock, you'd pay a brokerage commission, same for real estate, you never get official rate at the money changersselling gold few bucks below spot is not the end of the world !
