 The rioting began after a liquor store in South LA was being looted by gang members & officers called for assistance when some residents attacked their police car When the police arrived at the corner of Florence & Normandie, a mob who was already outraged by the Rodney King verdict gathered & the arrest of one resident set things off When the mob’s rage grew & rocks & bottles began being thrown, officers were ordered to retreat & regroup at their temporary command center at a bus depot blocks away, & when TV news footage showed no police presence at Florence & Normandie, this emboldened rioters & looters who later took part in the riots Also, a protest at Parker Center prevented police there from moving out to other areas of unrest
