In my family we dont buy adults presents unless we are invited into somebodys home as you give a gift to the host/hostess

Gift giving is an interesting topic especially around Christmas time If you don't want to do gift exchanges don't accept gifts and tell people don't buy me anything That's one that I do However, I have been a big gift giver and will be ending for the most part this year I have given gifts, stuff and things to over 30 family members and non family members as well So many people go into debt or have stress because of it Putting ourselves first is the best thing we can do in this life

Just buy each family a tin of butter cookies… Kids get bag of hersheys kisses… you really can get everyone something and not spend much money Or go to Goodwill and get some Christmas tins and make Christmas cookies and each family gets a tin of cookies Don’t be embarrassed Don’t be sorry even in expensive gifts are given and goodwill, and from the heart

I have an idiot family member that buys an elderly relative an Amazon gift card and the elderly family member has no Amazon account let alone the internet The idiot family member will not use their Amazon account to help them order something and instead volunteers me I am like how hard could it be to actually get someone a gift card to a store the elderly person could use instead of causing two people an inconvenience I think adults should forego gift giving to each other and just focus on the kids only

At best, Christmas is for giving to others who have nothing, IMHO At the very least, Christmas is for children As an adult, I don't need gifts for any holiday, birthday included At a pharmacy to pick up a prescription one Christmas Eve I was stunned at the amount of people shopping for last minute "stocking stuffers" and remember wondering, "Do they feel joyful doing this, or obligated?" I feel grateful opting out of this kind of obligation

And you can spend time with family not at Christmas (and thus not do presents) I find traveling around Christmas or Thanksgiving time are a major hassle Visiting family during the second week of December much cheaper and less stressful

We begged our BIG family to draw names for years and a couple of aunts dug in hard against it because they didn’t want anyone getting ONE gift( gifts are their love languages) but eventually we convinced them to draw names for one gift exchange and do a white elephant for a second gift exchange We made it a lot of fun and even the aunts are on-board now It took a long time and a lot of pleading but we got there I don’t think it’s worth ruining relationships over, but talk to your family Start in July!

My mom's family went to a gift swap Each person draws one name from the family to buy for Now instead, they've gone to a Yankee swap Each person does a $10 gift or less for the game There are some ways to still give, but make it affordable if everyone can get on board

I hosted Thanksgiving one year at my home for my family instead of giving Christmas gifts to them They were going to open the gifts after dinner I spent a lot of money on the dinner and thought that was my gift to everyone I was shocked when I didn't get one gift I wasn't offended, though I got thinking about it and I was glad I didn't get any It started me standing on my word that I wasn't going to give gifts because we were digging our way out of debt Plus I didn't need anymore stuff

For years I fought the gift giving thing Our new family tradition is that we each bring one wrapped gift appropriate for your age group We play BINGO or Loteria (Mexican Bingo) and the winner chooses a gift If someone BINGO's twice they let someone who hasn't pick a gift We ALWAYS have extra gifts and we play until everyone has picked a gift It's a ton of fun and it's family time spent together Everyone looks forward to it every year

We always give gifts for our own kids only All of the kids (20) have a Secret Santa gift (name drawn), and the adults do our own Secret Santa We don't even give ourselves gifts as couples Also we always set a max and min level, kids will be 50 max 15 min Adults will be more This way it's fair

As a broke single parent I can assure you all receiving gifts from adult family members brings me no joy whatsoever All it does is make me feel like I have to spend what little money I have on something for them I could choose not to but that won't make me feel any better I would much neither of us exchanged gifts and I could use that money for my son during the Christmas period More than happy to buy gifts for my nieces and nephews but that is it
