I was confused by the lack of main courses until I realised that Americans consider Entrees the same thing WildbrbrFor context: In the UK (and I think the rest of Europe), the entree is the course between appetisers and mainsbrbrI made my dopamenu a bit more complicated:brbrCarrot Sticks: brHealthy, non-distracting, low dopamine but quick activities which promise high dopamine payoffbrbrAppetisers: brQuick activities that reset the brain but don't distractbrbrEntree: brLow-energy pops of dopamine to complement a main course activitybrbrMains: brActivities which bring lasting joy and make me feel alivebrbrDesserts: brActivities that can be enjoyed alongside other activitiesbrbrSpecials: brComfortable habits that are unhealthy, unfulfilling and/or command attention for hours Comment from : @gracemfrench |

When nothing brings you joy or the dopamine you expect, it’s often a sign of depression, and reaching out to your doctor can be a really effective solution brHowever, another way I’ve managed my depression is by recognizing that the brain often becomes conditioned to unhealthy patterns, associating pain and hurt with satisfaction or pleasure (depression) brbrBreaking these patterns and doing the opposite will feel uncomfortable at first It requires a lot of mental stamina and consistent effort to build new neural pathways that signal safety and comfort in healthier habits This process opens the door to patience, self-compassion, and the ability to fully feel your emotions while balancing what needs to be done in a better and more intentional way Prescription medication can help regulate your nervous system, providing the guidance you need but you also have to put in the work, take intentional steps to address your thoughts, behaviors, and habits for overall well-being Comment from : @beverlyjean6931 |

So, if new things engage us and provide dopamine hits, could it be that that is why our brains race and have multiple thoughts at once etc constantly? Because each new thought gives a tiny tiny amount of dopamine due to its newness, but because its such a small hit of it our brains need to keep pushing another thought through it, and another, like its desperately trying to maintain a baseline amount of dopamine to function? brbrAnd why, when we get dopamine from "proper" ways like exercise in decent amounts our brains calm down, because it has what it needs now to functionfor now at least :D It would be very interesting if we could measure how much dopamine each new thought gives us brbrIt would also explain why periods of stress etc make our brains do it even harder, we need more dopamine for this stressful situation perhaps and our brain is trying to produce it for us at the higher level it needs for this situation, but its methods are unfortunately unhelpful in reality and society and in the end its still a bare baseline, only now its the baseline for stress times so even though your brain is trying harder than ever before it not only doesn't feel much different in terms of dopamine level, but also you are now even more mentally drained from the extra cognitive effortbrbrJust a thought I had watching this, I'm probably way off (or this is well known!) but hey, it was fun to think about (I had got up to wash clothes but now im back here writing this comment :D Comment from : @JetSteele |
|
genuine question: how do you know which things you enjoy? AuDHD here I have a hard time generally categorizing things into something I enjoy or not It could be because I was depressed for quite a while between ages 16-19, I struggled a lot with fitting in and a very toxic friend group I dind't allow myself to do many things, i always censored myself, I tried to be everythig others wanted me to, and now I feel like I have no sense of identity I got help for that, and I feel like I emerged from the depths of the ocean I've been trying out as many new things as possible, in order to find a passion and to not fall behind my peers I don't know what I enjoy Comment from : @irinacebanu7182 |

Hm Finally starting to find the videos I think will help me, but this one will have some study involved Started strong as the texting thing hit home, but I stopped enjoying things awhile ago, so the things I did for enjoyment joined the category of things I wish I could do if I could focus well enough I guess I do lots of idle things, but it feels more like desperation than idle time burning or distraction The experience of having hours in the day, and no means to make them bearable for years on end I guess I now know what I'll look for a video on next Comment from : @purpletrauma |
|
