I work as an IT field service technician and I can tell you there’s very little demand for this kind of work The pay is also extremely low I travel 50 (100 round trip) miles just to swap out a hard drive Really dumb stuff Nobody seems to care about it anymore But computer parts aren’t cheap Some old used motherboards are surprisingly very expensive They’re so old you might as well buy a new computer It’s like what Watto said in the Phantom Menace With the cost of the old parts you might as well buy a new starship

There is still good amount of demand for building computers specifically, Many Companies and manufacturing retail require people for buiding Computers brMoreover Large Corporations will still require employees to build Sophisticated Computers for continuing operations and systems Similarly, If One can understand Building and Reparing in a broader lens they will easily grasp the term "Computers" are not only a desktop build for homes, rather Computers are Sophisticated machinesThus From Niche Retails, Those who can acquire effective knowledge & skill will find themeselves on large corporations responsible for sophisticated computer machines continious operation

In my area all the computer repair technician or computer installation technician are often being called " Computer Engineers " and mostly required to travel on-site to troubleshoot for the clients So that said, the terms had been used quite exchangeable It's pretty confusing and ambiguous, normally it's only an IT field technician Funny thing most companies here are called them the " engineers " Only to make the jobs title look fancy

This video was relevant back in 2018, but since the silicon chip shortage, having some skills in repair on-site for administrators and other positions is becoming important Generally, especially for small business, it's difficult to get orders fulfilled for basics like desktop PC's, laptops, etc Being able to refurbish and extend the life of workstations and servers is a good additional skill for IT administrators and workers

I recently got a gig at a local school district Bunch of broken Chromebooks and iPads from students We also do teacher laptops (Windows) with spilled liquid or backing up data brbrIt's a good starting place for me to do hands on stuff

I just got hired doing computer repair at a mom and pops type place, I’m learning a ton of great skills! I will say it doesn’t pay great (it’s actually a second job, not my full time gig) but I’m planning to use it as experience to get into a help desk or desktop support role in the future, along with that it’s just freaking fun to build pc’s and work on computers!!

PC building and repair is essentially an outmoded skill set There are a few companies that hire people for this type of work Problem is on the build side, this is nothing more than assembler type work, that anyone can be taught to do Right off the street, with no prior experience So obviously, the pay is low On the repair side companies don't highly value PC repair techs Their pay is just a few dollars more than minimum wage, on average Reason being, brand new PCs are so cheap these days, it does not make sense to invest hundreds of dollars into repair Hence PC tech is not a viable long term career option

Finding work as a pc bench tech in 2020 is really tough now instead of a regular job you might find much more doing temp or longer term contract work instead

There are companies in Australia that charge between $150 to $200 per hour for PC installation, upgrades and repair Many will charge this hourly rate even if it only takes 10 minutes to solve the actual problem That's one of the reasons why I became interested in PC repair But I see it as more of a side gig than a career Other ways to get into this field are by buying used PCs, performing upgrades and flipping them for a profit

Correct the new repair environment is incorporated in jobs labeled Field Technician Field Technicians work not only on computers, you have to know how to work on networks, troubleshooting, client education and how to up sale Its also important to learn Audio Visual More IOT devices, Smart TV's and AV equipment now are connected to internet There is no advantage being a master in a single area
