Great video Alex, you're quite right cameras don't take pictures, people take pictures Comment from : @andrewcroft2570 |
The problem with Yousuf Karsh's quote is the people who need to heed it the most are the ones who already think they do They already think they are great photographers And chances are, they're also gear heads Comment from : @don06281 |
Thanks Alex! Yousuf Karsh, what an icon! I,ve seen the photos - of course - but never ever heard the photographers name before Comment from : @peterjoseph3839 |
Priceless; many thanks for the video! Comment from : @EternallyWild |
Another insightful, evocative, and inspiring video Thank you Comment from : @The80sBoy |
I enjoyed your video, thanks Comment from : @russellgregory736 |
too much waffle Comment from : @johngabris9690 |
thank you! Comment from : @JoeGarde |
I think these are some really good points Rarely if ever is a photograph just about sharpness or technical aspects (of course, color can be technical and some photographs are centered around color and how it interacts with the subjects or other colors, but in general, most photographs we see are more about how they are crafted and the subject matter than the technical aspects of it -- being the lenses used, the camera model or brand used, etc) Comment from : @HR-wd6cw |
An extreme segment of the current “snap - dash school” is today’s version of street photography Horrid examples clog YouTube Comment from : @MrDjay46 |
Didn't know all these iconic portraits were clicked by the same photographer! Thank you for introducing him to me! Comment from : @nachiketpargaonkar8646 |
Great as Ever Comment from : @aikcreationsmultimedia1489 |
Loving the tech-aside, photo philosophy emphasis your channel has! A much needed Youtube series in this material world Comment from : @hotelunion2368 |
Excellent tutorial! 2 points: did you just ring the deathbell of DSLR 📸? Your foto examples are great/perfect, but most of the books you are showing are not easily available (old/out of print, expensive) Comment from : @wolfgangtoeglhofer1710 |
What about sports photography?nowadays it needs to be captured and sent as fast as possible which appears the opposite of this ? I’m not sure 🤔 Comment from : @policeluber6720 |
I don't know at what point people thought that the better the gear meant the better photos you will take Maybe they originally meant 'better' as in pixels, or colours etc rather than content of the image br But to ever think the content of your photos will be better with better gear is as ridiculous a thing I've ever heard You could give me the world's most expensive and professional paints and brushes The best I could give you would still be a stick man drawing You cannot buy a creative eye Comment from : @Dplaysitcool |
YES EXACTLY! (I wonder if Karsh was an extravert and a good conversationist) Comment from : @bdcooper5855 |
Excellent video! I think I need to watch your videos over and over so that the ideas will eventually sink in Great stuff - thanks for sharing! Comment from : @darrenleigh201 |
I agree with you 100 with regards to the camera not being the most important thing And I like the advice to really look, and establish connection with the subject of your picture, However, almost all of your examples were photos by Yousuf Karsh, who is an absolute master of lighting Since a photograph is not possible without light, I think we need to spend some serious time and attention on the art and science of light and lighting Comment from : @jimwrathall5323 |
From the thumbnail I was honestly expecting this to be a video about back button focus, but so glad it was about mindfulness and actually studying your subject I love working with people and trying to catch those 'moments', and it pains me sometimes to watch friends who are photographers spend too much time trying to pose people, or trying to get the focus just right and they do get a usable photo, but they miss that spark of connection with the subject Comment from : @EnigmaartsPhoto |
Love the depth and composition in the image at 2:35 Comment from : @webvideofan |
My profile photo is a head shot with beauty dish high front and 2 kickers 45 degrees back The kickers are a stop too bright blowing out along the cheeks pure white It is an homage to Karsh's shot of Hemingway I stop to see hanging over Hemingways mantle in Key West of him with a white beard My hot cheek highlight represent his beard Karsh is one of my favorite photographers, Hemingway one of my favorite authors And that quote is fantastic for the gear heads who think a lens makes art Now I shoot a high percentage of my work with cameras and lenses up to 40 years old and never loved my work more or enjoyed it more Comment from : @mrca2004 |
It's all shapes, colors and lighting😊 Comment from : @FlatWaterFilms |
Brilliant 🎥 Comment from : @blackmamba3427 |
Very inspiring! Thank you! Comment from : @creativepicnl |
Looks like Karsh just took the same photograph over and over again with a different person sat on the chair I'm not a fan personally Comment from : @stephencooper5155 |
The equipment doesn't make the photographer, but a good photographer needs to have proper equipment Comment from : @Zecamilleo |
Has anyone even been in a restaurant and after enjoying their meal asked the chef what oven he used? `Cameras do not take great pictures Photographers do' Comment from : @tduke91 |
A side topic could be how to shoot a great headshot And the answer is much the same Getting a natural expression on the face According to Peter Hurley, a headshot photographer in New York, he has a ten step process but the clincher is to make the person be themselves, which is generally done by catching them off guard Peter Hurly also had a book on headshot photography, and I believe it is still sold on Amazon Comment from : @vividmemories8883 |
Some wise guy, don't remember who it was, said: "The most important part of a camera are the 20 cm behind it!" or so Comment from : @zolie7191 |
Photography is visual communication, cameras, lenses, filters, lighting, technique etc etc, are the tools we use to express what we see I prefer to look at art and design books for ideas, rather than other photographers work, that way my mind isn’t clouded with pre conceived ideas Comment from : @edwardcrosby5034 |
I have another story that would suggest Karsh would agree with your premise that it is not the equipment Early in my photographic hobby (more the 40 years ago when I was in my 30's) Karsh visited our local art museum with an exhibition of his works I had the opportunity to have a one-on-one conversation with himbrI was shooting with a 35mm film camera and knew that his images were shot on large format studio cameras (like an 8x10) I asked him a question that implied that perhaps there was no hope I could ever produce images like his because I was not shooting large format film With barely disguised disdain, he suggested that it is like a great author who could create the same work whether he used pen and ink or a fancy typewriter (this was before personal computers and word processors even existed) He made it very clear that he believed the secret was several inches behind the camera and not the camera itself Comment from : @douglashaag1127 |
The main thing for a great phot is that the subject not be holding a cell phone up in front of them Cell phones and rampant narcissism have ruined photography Comment from : @sustainablelife1st |
I love Karsh's work! Incredible stuff Comment from : @tonydesarzec907 |
I totally agree that the best gear is never a substitute for one's talent / skill / eye However when you combine an experienced photographer with updated gear that "gets out of the way", and makes it easier to just focus on the image / composition - it can absolutely help level up one's images And this is probably more applicable in some genres more than others (sports & wildlife, long lens / fast action come to mind first) Comment from : @csc-photo |
Very relevant topic and very well presented! I love this kind of content But absolutely unnecessary the click-bait on the video thumbnail Comment from : @JulioBomfim |
Good morning Sir☕️ Comment from : @judgerivers7631 |
It's all about the lightingbrGive a great photographer one light, and he will produce a great photographbrGive a mediocre photographer a dozen lights, and he will probably make a mediocre photographbrThe study of light is never a chore for those who really love photography Comment from : @ThePurpleHarpoon |
I have a problem with your videos I'm sorry, it may just be mebrI make a habit of liking all videos I watch on YouTube, but I find your videos so engaging, that I forget to like them and have to watch them again, so I have time to hit the like buttonbrAnother great vlog, thank you! Comment from : @henrywilliam8506 |
Thank you Alex for another inspiring video Comment from : @sbai4319 |
I wasn’t aware of Karsh quote, funny enough however is that is very similar, close as a concept to how I have often presented myself with my own quote for the past 20 years brDON'T EXPECT TO SEE WHAT YOU LIKE, I CAN ONLY SHOW YOU WHAT MY EYES, HEART, MIND AND SOUL CAN SEE Comment from : @nilofido411 |
In my opinion the best photography channel on YouTube Comment from : @MrJimbobings |
You have just pointed me to a long and winding road Thank you nevertheless 😀 Comment from : @SimonWillig |
Fantastic I actually hadn’t heard that quote before, but it so nicely sums up what matters in a photograph Thought-provoking as always, Alex Comment from : @saxmangeoff |
Thanks for sharing great advice & appreciate your help cheers from Australia 😀 Comment from : @robertdavis1255 |

Oh boy! what a great video The message here is so powerful that I wonder how many of us will really get it We live in a world of high tech gear and the marketing of cameras that can do so many things and promise us the best of photography outcomes Can it really be this simple? I was in a charity shop recently and saw this book ' Odysseys and Photographers' A story about 4 National Geographic Field Men Maynard Owen Williams, Luis Marden, Volknar Wentzel and Thomas Abercrombe' Looking at their pictures and considering the era and equipment the work of each tells a fascinating story of their journeys around the early 1917- 1977 Thank you for this simple but informative message about seeing what is right in front of us all Comment from : @pixels1497 |
There is no secret Just start photographing Over time you will find your style snd focus Comment from : @kodithebear |

Absolutely the best video I have seen all year Thank you; sharing and liked Must watch for more than the obvious reasons Brilliant!! Thank you 🙏🏻 Comment from : @lifeisgood4519 |
Fun part is that most of best portraits made I have ever seen are done on old equipment, with 1 light modifier, this could be literally be made with smartphone today technically speakingbrWe all need you once in a while to remind us, that it's not gear taking pictures, but we are, and we all suck at it xD Comment from : @Deruzejaku |
It's a bit like Kung Fu Panda "There is no secret ingredient" - it's all in you, you just have to bring it out Comment from : @Giles29 |
The problem with ‘modern day photography’ is editing software Plain and simple Don’t get me wrong, editing is sometimes useful but, some just take it too far and when you have photographers such as me ‘hobbyist’ looking at those, it does kinda put you on a downer You automatically think your gear is useless Well, I used to think that before I learned how most photographers use photoshop etc IMHO 😉 Oh, and my gear is just kit lenses and they do the job Comment from : @thatbaldguy44 |
"It's that simple" Those are great words to remember it's about the subject! It's never about the gear brbrYour films are always informative, but more importantly, always though provoking, and inspiring viewers to action To taking the risk to try something new Thank you so much Comment from : @iainmacdonald7034 |
I've been a pro for 35yrs - had hundreds of cameras from 35mm all the way up to 10x8 and back down the digital rabbit hole - people always ask me what camera I think they should buy - in the old days my advice was 'buy the cheapest camera you can and spend the rest on film' - now I say this 'I don't care what camera you have, but I do care what you put in front of it' Comment from : @nelsonclub7722 |
As with sports or any kind of activity in life, it is a lot of hard work to make it look effortless… Comment from : @jacobh5817 |
Thanks Comment from : @philneath2965 |
even just looking at the examples shown is a great lesson, thank you Comment from : @paololarocca7684 |
Sometimes the simplest of ideas are the best Thanks for making that point so clearly Your videos are always insightful and helpful Cheers Comment from : @alanwainwright79 |
Some of the best photos were taken on sheet film Gear makes more excuses than art Gear is not talent, gear is confidence that technology and manufacturing will fill in the gaps for skill Comment from : @testshoot |
Do u have a link to your work? Comment from : @MyCrodie |
But Diane Arbus said the subject is more important than the picture, which in her work she is right Her compositions and posing of subjects is sub par— she even said it herself she doesn’t really know what composition is But her subject matter transcends her picture making from the freaks, the transvestites, midgets (in her own words), and the marginalized to name a few Comment from : @vmno6300 |
The only channel I am watching to learn photography 👏👏 Comment from : @mukeshframes |

Simpler, IMO, choose your subject, eliminate anything that doesn't contextualize your subject, and have no more than three of those Comment from : @jamesoliver6625 |
I find people emote more when you're not ready for them Or you are ready, but your camera or lens isn't Comment from : @wayneclayton5426 |
I think the clickbait thumbnails are quite off putting, especially with the top tier quality of the channel Otherwise probably a daily watch! Comment from : @fixxxer4234 |
Really hard to get an emotion from a flower Animals a little easier if you study their movements, people are the epitome of emotions Comment from : @tedbrown7908 |
And you guys thought it was gonna be about the gear lol 😂 Comment from : @warrend8362 |
Spot metering, per chance? Comment from : @Notso_Wild_Bill |

Is it going to be back button focus? Comment from : @Agustin664TJ |
