Taxes are ALWAYS deducted from cash prizes BEFORE you get your money The gov't gets their cut FIRST The value of non-cash prises is reported to the IRS and you should get a 1099-MISC from the sponsor The IRS will be looking for that value on your 1040 Legitimate sponsors never charge any fee to winners You can't win anything if you don't enter the contest Cold notificatons about prize winning are always a scam The goal is to get personal financial information from the "winner" without awarding any prize

Just got a phone call from someone claiming to be a delivery driver with Publishers Clearing house, and saying I needed to sign for a package I hung up when he started telling me to take down a car model and license-plate, etc Had I though better of it I might have written down the car's information to report to the police in my area in case they were actually driving my way I imagine it was just a ploy to get me to prep a "tax payment" to receive money or something
