Thanks for the listbrbrI just installed mac Sierra (10124) and it runs much slower than my Windows 10 install on basically identical hardware I'm a huge tech guy that has used multiple versions of Windows, Mac, and Linux and Mac is by far my least favorite, and by far the slowest I was hoping this list would show me some apps I was missing to make it better but alas, Mac has less features than Win 10 and is slower, so back to Windows I gobrbrbrAgain, thanks for the list, it's very good for someone who only has Mac Comment from : CringeHunterJon1 |

You missed Audacity!! The single and only 'go to' app for anyone wanting to do audio stuff on their Mac It's free and has an awesome range of things it can do, such as edit any sound file in 000's of different ways, strip audio from video, mix and merge audio, anything really It isn't the prettiest interface, not by a long way, but if you can ignore that it will prove its worth many times over What VLC is for video, so Audacity is for audiobrAnd for anyone a bit more ambitious in the DJ line, who wants to 'mix' like a pro, there is DJay from Algoriddim, a paid-for appear which gives you two virtual turntables side by sidebrFinally, on the audio side, and also paid-for, there's Hear which I've been using for all sound output on my Mac Basically you use it to increase stereo separation providing a bigger sound stage, and there's all kinds of graphic equalisers and stuff, plus a whole load of presets you can use Once you've set what you want your output to be, quit the app and the setting applies to all audio everywhere on the Mac Launch the app again to switch it off or change settings Comment from : Chris Rigby |
Instead of paying for Daisy Disk, why not use the free Disk Inventory X? It gives you the same colour coded graphic picture of the stuff on your HD (but in a square rather than a wheel shape), with a pop out sidebar showing you the actual file names and sizes Comment from : Chris Rigby |
Another note : you can't use SuperDuper! without paying for all its features, just basic stuff CarbonCopyCloner by Bombich is generally (nowadays) considered to be superior and is also free (donateware) Comment from : Chris Rigby |
I was interested in Infinit, but their website says they're discontinuing file transfer in favour of storage, as from March 2017 This coincides with Dropbox ending support for their Public folder (direct link file sharing) I don't know what it is with these companies, but it seems that cloud file sharing has suddenly become a "no-no" Or is it just coincidence? You decide Comment from : Chris Rigby |
Evernote is not free anymore I've change to Google Notes instead Comment from : Richie Liew |
Oh - you forgot one of the most useful type of app (none are free, sadly) : text expanders! There's Typinator, TextExpander and the one I've been using for over 20 years, TypeIt4Me Just to demonstrate what I've done with it, here's the alphabet (each letter followed by a space, which is one of my defined expansion triggers), which forms just 23 of the 800 total abbreviations I've so far defined: "a but can do each for get have i just know left may not out put quite right s the until very with except you big" brAccording to its Stats, in the 5 years I've used the latest version, it's saved me over 3 million keystrokes and based on my typing speed, 268 hours of typing! But any text expander would do the same Money well spent Comment from : Chris Rigby |
Good stuff You mentioned many of my favourites like Alfred, BTT, VLC, Dropbox (though beware - they're about to 'break' all the Public folder links ever posted), Spotify, Pixelmator and many others brbrAlternatives: I use iClip instead of your suggested clipboard manager, very easy to use, and Journler still trounces Evernote as long as you can get it to work (unsupported for years) brbrYou didn't mention ancient Mac emulators and DOS - DOSBox is free and will run those ancient PC DOS programs; Sheepshaver and Basilisk are also free and will let you run OS 75,3 to 904, and System 6 to System 7, respectively - especially great if you need to run old versions of Word or Word Perfect or ClarisWorks / AppleWorks, and you can export to OS X br which is where you omitted the very best thing about LibreOffice - it will recognise and open SO MANY old document formats, it's not true! Brilliant, especially for those files you just exported from SheepshaverbrbrI'd also add the free Bean as a superior TextEdit, and probably the best paid-for app out there - if you do ANY writing - is Scrivener Comment from : Chris Rigby |
