I agree that assessments should be used to drive and direct instruction, not only to assess progress Therefore assessment should be ongoing, not just at the end of instruction

Yes I agree with you She is describing the challenges EL's face in learning English in terms of "distance" from English I believe the point she's making is that when you examine various components of language such as alphabet, syntax, structure, etc, English is "easier" to learn if your native language is a romance language than if it's Arabic, or Chinese, or Russian, etc Romance languages are "closer" to English than these other languages in that they share numerous similarities in their alphabets, syntax, structures, etc She is NOT saying that English is a romance language

It appears that students who are literate in a brRomance language (eg, Spanish, Portugese, Italian) as their primary language might acquire English more readily than students who are literate in a non-romance language such as Russian, Arabic Turkish, because those languages share fewer similarities with English in terms of their alphabetic symbols, cognates, syntax, etc She is not calling English a Romance language
