I’m old enough to have had to do a lot of rote learning in primary school This early practice makes it a lot easier to hold things in memory - I think you also unconsciously learn mental tricks to retain information for as long as you need to Not everything, of course I write notes on paper, younger people put everything into their phones, illiterate societies had to memorise everything or it was lost for ever There must have been a time in the past when all foreign language learning was by ear alone Comment from : @rocktapperrobin9372 |

You know, that's what i was thinking, shouldnt i learn the names of things before i learn to put a sentence together How does sentence structure even help, if i don't know what the things being talked about are Living in Vietnam Sure, if i were in a school ordering a coffee with milk and a tea for a student and their doctor, I'd understand what was said, but come on, that wont help me talk to my neighbor, when the only words they say that i understand are and, or, with, and the A perfect score on Duolingo, sure, but without the nouns I have no understanding Comment from : @ChrisBGramzizpups |

Two powerful language-learning tools that haven't been mentioned in this video:br- Comic-strip books in the target languagebr- Songs in the target languagebr I have used both when available to learn a variety of languages I find it much more difficult when neither is availablebr Songs are generally easy to learn, just look up the lyrics to help, and they often portray an easy-to-recall background reference when in doubt I've learned many songs in English, Portuguese, French, and Turkish, and a few in other languagesbr Comic strips let you easily learn by context You can re-read any part or word at your own pace It's a pity you can't hear the printed text! Although you sometimes can, if posted in the Internet This is the way I learned Portuguese vocabulary (my neighbour lent me 40 such booklets for one month, and I hasted to read them fast) Comment from : @wafikiri_ |

Great interview! I really enjoyed how deeply you delved into this topic! I’m so fascinated by the various languages you have learned Which one was the most difficult to learn and which was the easiest (as an adult, since you said Spanish comes easy but you learned it as an adolescent)? Also, have you learned Yoruba yet? How do find using it with your Nigerian relatives? Comment from : @beemee4416 |

It is very difficult to take this video seriously when they start with "The ancient Romans didn't have Duolingo" as if Duolingo is the epitome of literacy and language teaching methodology Comment from : @rbaleksandar |
|

If that method was “incredible” why should I believe you? As a professor and a linguist, surely you must know the importance of correct adjectives Why not use positive adjectives like “extraordinary, remarkable”? Comment from : @alexmarcus9009 |

I remember finding a paragraph of Cicero's that contained every refutation technique, and the important symbolism of hope as an anchor of the soul I was told that Romans would practice rhetoric by memorizing important passages brbr Cicero wrote the passage, knowing it would be copied, in order to preserve the symbol Later, you see St Paul co-opt this symbol, twisting its meaning (which speaks to the dual nature of hope as an object for suckers, but I digress) Comment from : @CiceroSapiens |

As someone with a really good passive knowledge of a language who is too afraid to speak – being shy is not a good reason You need to nip it in the bud before it becomes a complex I don't learn 'differently', I just received negative feedback that made me nervous Do I need someone to be understanding and patient? Yes Do I need to avoid active production because I don't want to do it? Absolutely not Comment from : @CapucineAbadie |

I wonder if u have encountered anything about the Igbo language Some say the Igbo language is the original language in which the bible was written, as well as the language from which Greek and Latin originated So, in my opinion, it would be a good idea for anybody who is into linguistics to investigate the issue Comment from : @miaknonow |

When in Germany I asked for dos cervaza, por favor, instead of Zwei bier, bitte knowing that no matter how I said it, even if I said, deux bières s’il vous plaît, I would have gotten two beers☺ You know, the basics💗 Seriously though, great video, I love languages and the mechanics of them Memorization is key When learning how to memorize, repetition at a young age is important, I'm just an arm chair linguist but have had to learn different languages in my 70 years Every formal training I've had has been the greetings and the alphabet and grammar first (Germans put their verbs last, Spanish but adjectives behind the nouns) However, I found the immersion method has always been more conducive to just plain street talk Comment from : @ceceliaroberts1475 |

lol, people unironically think that ancient societies were stupid and illiterate They didn’t have TV or radio, or computers, so they read and wrote far more and at a far more proficient level than we did because they had to write everything down They also had more contact with surrounding foreign cultures which necessitated them learning language And to think they didn’t have dictionaries in antiquity? How the fuq does this idiot think we translated ancient texts? Magic? Comment from : @redlightdeath |

Language learning is fun when you have a friend who really the speaker and willing to teach you to have fun together The first half of this idea is how language schools often establish upon, the second half is that they hope you're not an antisocial who just want to read textbooks and articles Comment from : @cefcephatus |

The stick was also used Liberally And with its full force Comment from : @kebman |

|
This isn't an accurate explanation of Krashen, there's a bunch of comprehensible input, but roughly 20 of the effort is actually studying the vocab and grammar to make the process more efficient Nobody just sits around languages being spoken and just picks it up like that without spending some time on specifically studying the vocab and grammar Comment from : @SmallSpoonBrigade |
