As I sit here at home doing unpaid prep this morning, they asked me, the lead teacher, to start at noon because they need to “share the wealth” with other staff when our hours are limited The pay is insulting and the shuffling and juggling of our schedules and time is no better Comment from : @ohhheyhihello |
For those ECE's who left, what do you do now? Inquiring minds want to know! Comment from : @ThrivingNotDying |

$18/hr is pretty good pay for babysitting babies But, for a few credentials more, one can do very well babysitting the older kids in public school Comment from : @KevinWatters-y2z |
Emotionally, my current corporate job is weighting down on me I want to do ECE, but don't know whether that's realistic😢 Comment from : @jsunnys1936 |

We are educators not babysitters! Comment from : @Rawbirds0306 |

i'm studying for ece as of currently unsure what kind but do know it does have to with ece but even i empathize with the actual eces, in fact i think its outrageous how underpaid teachers and other ece are despite all their hard work career i mean all that and they only get paid that much? it makes me worry that i’ll also eventually end up having to get to that point of quitting as well if the underpay issue continues on and i really dont want it to come to that i absolutely love working with children it makes me feel good about myself as a person and its the only career path i am passionate about but this just cannot continue its not fair for them at all Comment from : @emi7619-l8v |

I’ve been an ECE for nearly 7 years and I’ve been thinking of leaving the profession altogether We’re treated horribly on a regular basis, more so when we become sick or injured and are paid next to nothing It’s just not worth it I feel guilty for considering leaving because I care about the kids in my care and want to see them do well Comment from : @TiaLeopard |

And people wonder what's wrong with the world, how things got so negative Especially kids And people can't stand their own kids anymore Kids grow up, and become what they were shown in early childhood That's why they're all tiktok goons 🤪 Comment from : @jazzyg6059 |
It's one of the most important jobs in the world Also one of the most difficult There's no respect, no pay, and kids are being let down all the time around you as so many parents suck 😢 Comment from : @jazzyg6059 |
These kids should be home Comment from : @AlyseNicoleO |

I just found this video as i am so upset with restaurant workers making $20 an hour starting in April I only make $2150😢 AA degree, Site supervisor permit its so sad i might just go flip burgers 😔 We all need to stand together and do something about this Comment from : @kristinaamante4074 |
childhood educators make the same as a young person just starting out in the work force working at a fast-food establishment We essentially help parents raise and Teach there children This is the hardest job Teaching, feeding, changing diapers, challenging behaviors the list is endless and the stress level in this industry is very hard on an educator that is why most skilled educators are leaving they can have the same pay less stress and work, working at the mall Comment from : @BrendaTurley-t2y |
Wanted to be teachers not ped dough file groomers Comment from : @litterbug1483 |
Meanwhile here in London we're on £10 a hour and apparently that's considered a good wage Comment from : @db6881 |
I rlly, rlly want to get an ece diploma but the pay is holding me back😢 Comment from : @oompaloompa6221 |
It is very sad that we paid as "baby sitter" It is very hard to live as a professional My role is special need support in preschool, but paid like no difference with others However, most of the daycare or preschool doesn't care you have a SNE or not Because they can use ECEA to do it for less So, why do you go through more education, more money to get pay less? It is totally an insult Comment from : @ShuoArt |
I can’t do this anymore 😞 Comment from : @KxoxoG59 |
I found this as I am thinking of leaving the field since seeing I can make just as much at inn and out It is so sad considering the years of experience and I have my site supervisor permit Even if I got my BA in the field it's not worth it Comment from : @kristinaamante4074 |
Thank you to all the Early Childhood Educators out there ❤ there needs to be more advocacy around providing support to ECE Comment from : @amritagill1680 |
Seriously people dont you understand the power you have? Strike !!! If you strike so many people and industries will be affected You deserve a pay rise Comment from : @myphone-ph4hh |
I used to be in early childhood industry for five years High number of students, high medical leave rate, huge amount of stress from the expectations to deliver curriculum perfectly left me exhausted I went to software engineering and didn't look back for a while Comment from : @marielee4643 |
I wonder if there’s alot of positions at ece facilities that aren’t really contributing at all? Companies I worked at I have always found people getting paid pretty much doing nothing… or if the owners of the day cares are just keeping too much to themselves?brOr just the simple fact that day cares aren’t charging enough… brI really have no idea I just wish these ece professionals can get paid a decent wage Comment from : @d173928 |
Maybe we should be looking at why there are so few people who are able to start daycare businesses On its surface, if you have 20 kids whose parents are paying 1500 a month for daycare, that is an annual income of 360k a year That is more than enough to pay 2 people a decent wage and cover operating costs Is it perhaps government regulation that is driving up expenses? If there is such a high demand for child care, why is the supply so limited? Comment from : @VictoryOTP_ |
I graduated in 1998, and at the time my instructors told me the burn-out rate was 5 years I wonder what it is now? I'm older and will have to leave the profession soon, as the physical toll is becoming too much It has gotten much worse since 2020 I'm very worried about my future I'm trying to save some money, to go back to school Comment from : @ajourney50 |
This hits the nail on the head, I have been in the field 10 years, its been very challenging This is a great job financially IF you are just starting out but now that I live on my own and have bills, without my partner I wouldnt make rent Things need to change from the governements side of things Comment from : @aprildianne |
Eces received nothing and it’s hard to live on the pay Comment from : @andreawahlberg2368 |

Meanwhile, parents are paying an arm and a leg for daycare So if the caregivers themselves are not getting paid, who is? Comment from : @sca8217 |
I left the field 2 months ago… I have a BAS and wasn’t paid, my hours cut now I’m making twice the amount out of the field… have health and 401k plan… I miss the kids but need to look out for myself Comment from : @bluxlight |
The assistant is nobody even with a degree Comment from : @edwigejean5396 |
You don't need college degrees to baby sit children Colleges are lying to you Also they do NOT get paid like they have a college degree Maybe reality is trying to tell you some thing Comment from : @basicstickfigure1087 |
A good education goes a long way, especially during those early years And the way these undervalued early childhood educators are paid just goes to show how much the leaders in this country care for their next generation It's sickening Comment from : @kevinackerman3584 |
Scary for me since I’m earning my degree now in early childhood development 🥺😬 Comment from : @TheSanchezFam |
As an ECE teacher I can attest that the work is hard but rewarding That being said something has got to be done about the pay and long hours We should get the same pay, and time off as other teachers Comment from : @tiffanydaugherty6528 |
I was never an ECE but I was a teacher untilm2006 when I left They can't pay me enough to go back to the classroom now Comment from : @rosameryrojas-delcerro1059 |
As a former Early educator myself! Lack of pay! Especially in the state of Florida! The 4 plus years of schooling & continuing eduction training ! Many lack giving there stuff support healthcare benefits ect… Pay is horrible! With my experience & EDU I’m offered $15-$20 hour sad part rent here in Florida is double my pay We are not just babysitters !! Without early education specialist many children would lack so much and so would the families Many families need caregivers and so does the each state especially children who are in the foster care system must be in with a license caregiver Comment from : @oceandinner |
The crazy thing is I'm making way more as a babysitter than when I used to work in early childhood education (10X the work and taking care of way more kids) The pay is ridiculously low for the things we have to do on a daily basisstill miss and think about the children I used to work with though ❤️ Comment from : @daughterofjesus5379 |
Also any grandparent or mum or even dad who raises kids at home is almost never paid Comment from : @jermsbestfriend9296 |
Yep I've done this job Should be paid about 200 per hour Comment from : @jermsbestfriend9296 |

I’ve been working in ECE for years, and all of my friends who have different careers get paid way more than I do but don’t do early as much work as me Comment from : @kiaraharris5767 |

Babysitters? These people see and deal with the children on a more consistent basis than the parents do Most of the habits, manners and linguistics the children pick up are mainly from school settings, so whoever said these people are "just babysitters" should shut the fk up Comment from : @vi0l3nc35 |
I'm a pre-k teachers assistant, 1325 an hour is what I make I got this after being a stay at home mom and I dont necessarily need a job and can continue to stay home but yes the pay is trash Comment from : @tinyterroristnegotiator |
but why are they squishing the poor baby bumblebees? 😢 Comment from : @TheHolmaj |
There have been many studies on brain development in young children (ages 1 to 5) which have shown that the stimulation received during this time can dictate how well children preform in school later on And we all know that academic performance often determines the "success" of someone's career later on In other words ECEs are laying the ground work for kid's success later in life By not investing in ECEs we are divesting in the future generation Comment from : @amay304 |
Even in Indonesia 😅 Comment from : @mithamithun |
I just wanted to give all the Teachers and ECE's out there A BIG SHOUT OUT! THANK YOU Thank you for teaching my kids, thank you for being kind and sweet to my kids and for being there when I can't throughout the day! You guys are the best ! I appreciate u! Comment from : @yenairaroman5418 |

ECE student in New Zealand here It’s so interesting to see that ece educators around the world are facing the same issues I’m not even finished with my ECE degree and I want to leave it already The problem with the profession is that A, parents do not see early years as an important time of learning and B, the current structure of ECE isn’t actually benefiting children the way that it should The best teachers I’ve met in my 2 years of study do not like, and do not believe in the business focused structure of ECE The poor pay is only the start of these issues Comment from : @Jessi-44 |
Peak ABA Comment from : @tmderksen1 |
The funny thing is that many elementary, middle and high school teachers complain constantly about not getting paid enough Here in California a regular school teacher can easily make $60- $100k a yearbrDaycare teachers, no matter how much they work, will never be able to do that with the money they are currently making brAnd many daycare workers are just as educated and just as valuable as a regular school teacher Something doesn’t fit here Comment from : @MrsMysteryWoman |
What that second teacher said about how it is emotionally rewarding but not financially feasible for most of us: 💯 Comment from : @MrsMysteryWoman |
ECE professionals are undervalued, underpaid, overworked and overloaded You would think a society might care a bit more about the people caring for its children and raising the next generation Comment from : @EugenieJustine |
I teared up watching this, ECE was my life for 4 years and I loved every single minute and every child I took care of with all of my heart and soul ❤ I HAD to leave the profession because I couldn't afford living 5 days off a year, no benefits, no health insurance (and we get sick a lot), no 401K, 2 paid holidays a year and no pay for snow days!!!! I had to buy a lot of my supplies to ensure learning was happening in a fun and constructive way brChildcare workers deserve more!!!!! Comment from : @LiftedMoonLight |
Agree As ECE myself, I’m working while working on other things too so I can leave later I can’t imagine myself doing it and be able to save enough money to retire someday Comment from : @wanyuelbrand6916 |
After working in a school for a few years I rather work any type of other job than deal with children anymore Comment from : @auroramaria5587 |
😥😢 Comment from : @dnj20 |
I just made the jump after 20 years Like the one worker said, if not for the financial support of a spouse, I would not have been able to continue to work in the field of Early Childhood education and I have three degrees The masks, and vaccination pressure caused me to leave ultimately Comment from : @educate4284 |
I also want to add that toxic work environments (lack of support from management, nepotism, rewarding staff despite of inappropriate treatment of fellow coworkers, not being paid for mandatory meetings/events)brare an additional factor in causing people to leave… Comment from : @sandrad8092 |
We are much more than babysitters we are educators who is guiding and caring for young children, inspiring children to develop their creativity, art, dramatic play, math, science, social studies, geography, biology, music, circle time, learning how to be independent and a lot more, repetitively We are the secondary caregiver and educator For that being said, we deserve more than minimum wage! We need at least $25/ hr to start! Comment from : @Jinglealltheway-z7y |
Why can’t people just let kids be at their current stage of life? Why do they always have to be preparing them for the next stage of life? Stop doing math and science with them! Get rid of those tables and chairs! Comment from : @thehousespouse |
I can’t believe they only pay these remarkable folks minimum wage IN TORONTO!!! WTF Comment from : @ILLGCF |
As someone who is getting into this Field I am both excited and scared I know I will not be making much and that I’ll have a lot of student loans to pay back but at the same time I love the kids and I never feel like I’ve worked a day when I’ve been with them Comment from : @djanderson7599 |
We love to teach!! Even in Guatemala we have the same problem!! I could be paid 150 more working at a call center!!! It's really a shame!! I worked at a company not related to educational before They usted to paid me more and with less stress than as a being a teacher What do I mean? Please consider our job as a precious opportunity to form great hearts with a lot of skills!! God bless all the teacher that teach with love!! Comment from : @missjennygutierrez4691 |
God bless these ladies!!! ♥️ Comment from : @throughfaithandgrace2970 |

Underpaid and under appreciated Lots of schooling just to be considered a babysitter Comment from : @arlethdelaf |
$1800 dollars an hour in Toronto? Man I left that dump of city and returned back to the maritimes because the rents were starving me of living a half decent life I make a few dollars less than that, but I work in a group home, mostly doing crossword puzzles, yes, I am just a sitter, but, I don't pay rent , only utilities, because my employer owns property and does not charge rent to his workers I too have a degree, but it is worthless Toronto is no longer a place to survive in, unless the government is paying your bills Comment from : @leeeatmon5176 |
Just yesterday I was cautioning someone considering this profession The lack of a living wage and support (even within the system) is crippling Early childhood simply isn't valued in our society Comment from : @dawnd5290 |
